“I didn’t know.” Her soft declaration pulls me out of my own thoughts.

“You didn’t know what?”

“If I had known you were his boss, I never would have let it get this far. I don’t want to cause issues with his job. I don’t want to be the reason you have an issue with him.” She’s rambling, wringing her hands in her lap nervously.

“If that’s the case. I’m glad you didn’t know.” I pause, allowing my next words to sink in. “Even if you told me right now that you had to walk away from me for him, and let me be clear…” I stare deeply into her eyes, letting her see the sincerity in my words. “I really hope you don’t. Even if you said those words, I wouldn’t trade one moment I’ve shared with you. You are so special to me, mo ghrá.”

I don’t translate this time. Instead, I stand from my side of the table and slide in next to her, wrapping myself around her and pulling her close to my chest. We sit there for several moments before her phone pings with a notification. She pulls away just enough to look at her phone, but doesn’t leave my embrace.

Andy:

I’m sorry. You were right. Can we go to Providence? We haven’t been out in weeks. I want to make things better with us.

She puts her phone away with a sad laugh and wraps her arms around my torso, holding on even tighter. It takes a few minutes before either of us is ready to let go.

When she pulls away from me, her eyes are red and glassy with unshed tears. “You mean so much to me. No matter what happens, I wouldn’t trade a moment of our time together either.”

Chapter Fourteen

HADLEY

After lunch, while we’re walking back to Connor’s office and my car, I send a text to Kat and Ryan asking them to come over. I need my girls to get my mind around the fresh hell that has happened today and what it could mean.

Hadley:

911. Connor is Andy’s boss. Come over ASAP. Bring whiskey. Wine isn’t going to be strong enough.

Ryan:

Well, this is a fun plot twist.

Kat:

Shut up, Ry. We will be there soon babes.

When we get back to his office, Connor walks me to my car, wrapping an arm around my waist, and pressing me against the driver side door. He leans down, crashing his lips against mine so possessively that my body melts into the sculpted contours ofhis chest. He breaks the kiss before I’m ready, and we’re both panting with a need for more.

“Tease.” I playfully smack his arm.

The lopsided grin that takes over his beautiful face turns my already-heated core into a delicious molten mess. He takes a step backward and moves to open my door.

Pressing a quick kiss to my temple, he says, “I’ll call you later, gorgeous.”

Kat and Ryan are already at my place by the time I get there. I step out of my car, and Kat closes the distance between us, wrapping me in a tight embrace. I wrap my arms around her for a brief moment before releasing her.

“Are you okay, babe?” She shakes her head, as if answering her own question. “Obviously you’re not okay, but are you as okay as you can be?”

I laugh. “I don’t even know what to say. Connor and I never really discussed work because he would always get hounded by people if they saw him in public because of how exclusive the company is with the contracts it takes.” I sigh. “I respected that boundary and didn’t ask questions. It’s not like I got a crime boss vibe from him.”

Ryan shoots me a curious look. “I mean, heisIrish. What if he’s in the Irish mafia?”

Kat and I’s eyes meet, and we both fall into a fit of giggles.

“No, not even close,” Kat responds before I can. “Girl, we went shopping with him and he does not give off mafia vibes. Possessive alpha, sure, but there is no way he’s mafia.”

I snort out another giggle, nodding my agreement. “If he was, I don’t think that’s something he could hide with as much as we have been together since we met.”

“Whatever. I’m not crossing it off my list of possibilities.” Ryan crosses her arms.
