“You need anything, boss?” His voice is laced with concern.

The poor kid must be scared shitless. I attempt to mask my mood and control my features before I respond.

“I’m good. I’m going to take the rest of the day off. Call my cell if you need anything.” I stand, grabbing my laptop and briefcase before leaving my office.

I make it to my car before I pull my phone out and send a new text.

Connor:

If you two don’t hear from her before tomorrow morning, let me know.

I don’t bother waiting for a response before I send another message.

Connor:

I know you’re both pissed at her. I am too, but do not leave her alone with this. That’s not what she needs.

Kat:

I’m so scared. He’s going to kill her, and she won’t let us do anything to get her out of there.

Ryan:

I’m livid. She knows better than to do this.

Connor:

She feels obligated. They’re married, and as much as I fucking hate this and it’s breaking my heart, I will put myself back together while doing everything in my power to keep her safe.

Chapter Twenty-Four

HADLEY

I’ve been searching for my phone for the last twenty-four hours with no luck. Andy got home at eleven last night, and when I asked him if he’d seen it, he glared at me and went to bed.

He hasn’t really spoken to me since I told him the only way I’d try to make things work is if he ended things with Naomi. If his feelings are even remotely as strong as mine are for Connor, I can understand the difficulty, but I will not budge on this or my stipulation of therapy.

I go up the steps to his room and knock on the door.

“What, Hadley?” he grunts in greeting.

Oh, lovely.

“I’ve had no way of communicating with anyone for the past three days because I can’t find my phone,” I say softly, like I’m approaching a feral cat. “How was your day?”

“Apart from your boyfriend threatening me? It was fine.” He pins me with a look that sends chills down my spine.

“I ended it with him today. I told you I would try.” I pause. “How did Naomi take it?”

“So now you care about her feelings?” he growls.

“You have no one to blame here but yourself, Andy. Don’t put this on me,” I say flatly. “I told you I’d try if we closed the marriage and you went to a therapist to get help.”

“I know what you fucking said,” he snarls. “Go to bed, Hadley.”

I don’t bother responding, knowing it will just lead to more harsh words…or worse. My face can’t handle any more of the latter.

I walk to my room, my phone still nowhere to be found. I crawl onto the bed and see Connor’s shirt lying there. I don’t even bother putting it on, instead just pulling it into my arms and holding it tight against my chest. As I lie down, my head falls onto the pillow and the tears flow freely down my swollen and sore cheeks. My heart aches so badly. I never wanted this.
