“Is that so?” Hank leaned forward and placed the can of beer on the coffee table next to the bag. He looked up at Matt with a cool smile. “He’s never complained to me.”

“You intimidate him. He isn’t going to say anything to you. Besides, you’d probably kick him out.”

“If he’s so unhappy here, why doesn’t he move in with you?”

Matt faltered. “We haven’t been dating very long.”

“So, youdon’twant him to stay with you?”

“I didn’t say that. But it’s kind of early in our relationship to talk about moving in together.”

“But you seem soconcernedabout him.”

“Iamconcerned. But…”

“What?” Hank arched his brow. “Not concerned enough to offer him shelter from his big, bad brother?” His eyes narrowed as his smile darkened with amusement. “That’s abig commitment, and you haven’t decided if you’re going to continue fucking him…” He leaned a tad closer. “… have you?”

What’s happening here? How did this get turned onhim?Matt felt trapped beneath Hank’s penetrating, challengingstare. The guy was clearly getting his kicks by putting Matt on the spot and making him squirm.

“I like Miles a lot,” Matt said. “Not that it’s your business, but no, I’m not having doubts about him. We connect on many levels, not just sex. Even so, sex isgreatwith Miles. You don’t know anything about us. So, stop implying I’m not committed to my relationship with him. Iam.”

Hank shrugged, sighed, and leaned back against the sofa, arms snaking out across the back again, unfazed by Matt’s declaration of commitment to the man’s younger stepbrother. “What makes you think I know nothing about you and Miles?” he drawled, his gaze resting lazily on Matt in a veryirritatingmanner. “Maybe Miles has told me everything I need to know.”

“No, he hasn’t,” Matt spoke with quiet confidence. There was no way Miles would confide in this douche bag. “He would’ve told me. He tells me everything.”

“How do you know?” Hank smirked. “Becausehesays so? Maybe he’s lying to you.”

“He isn’t.”

“Buthowdo you know?” Hank flipped his fingers. “You said yourself that you guys haven’t been dating very long. Maybe everything he’s told you is a lie. Maybe he only pretends to likeyour dick. Maybe…” He raised an eyebrow. “… everything he said aboutmeis a lie.”

Matt shook his head. “I believe him… especially what he says about you.”

“Why is that?”

“Because in the short time I’ve been here,” Matt said, “you’ve already proven him right.”

“Uh-huh.” Hank chewed his lower lip, heavy eyes on Matt. “You find me detestable?”

“I kind of do.”

Hank sighed and nodded. “All right. So, let’s get down to business. I assumeMilessend you here to fight his battles.” He scoffed. “Figures. The little pussy.”

“He didn’t send me here,” Matt corrected stiffly. “In fact, he told menotto talk to you.”

“Really? Interesting.”

“Why is that interesting? He didn’t want to subject me toyou. Now, I understand why.”

“Is that why?” Hank chuckled, a smile on his face that caused Matt a twinge of unease. “Hm.”

Hm, what? Something in the man’s expression prevented Matt from pressing the matter. Hank let it go as well… for now.

“Whyareyou here?” Hank asked. “What exactly do you want from me?”

Matt hadn’t had much time to develop an argument on his way to the store then over to Hank’s house. He hadn’t thought heneededto rehearse—the issue was black and white, cut and dried. Wasn’t it? Hank made it seem less black and white, and moregrayish. Now, his argument points felt jumbled, though theyshouldn’tbe. Nothing had changed—Hank was still the prick that Miles said he was. So, shouldn’t Matt’s argument remain solid and unshakeable?

Why the fuck are you doubting yourself now? Just tell him off and get the hell out of here.
