We’ve wandered through the aisles, and she comes up short when we get to the end of this one. Her eyes fall on something in front of us again, and I follow. This time it isn’t a cozy house though. It’s a brunette woman who flips her hair over her shoulder as her eyes rake up all six-foot-five inches of Xander.

“She’s winning this, isn’t she?” I see a look of defeat on Madison’s face, and I want to kiss it away. But Tobias is somewhere in this grocery store, and I’d rather not die between the frozen peas and pizza.

“Not yet,” I argue, even though I don’t want to. I want her to give up on him and look at me like she did last night again.

“She’s so pretty. I can’t even really be mad. I just want to ask her for makeup tips and what shampoo she uses.” Madison sighs.

“She’s not prettier than you.”

Madison gives me a flat look, and her eyes dodge back and forth between the other woman and herself. The other woman is a few years older than Madison, and she also clearly spends time in the gym to make sure her legs and ass look great in the shorts she’s wearing. But Madison is every bit as beautiful and then some. She just doesn’t quite have the confidence yet to pull off her own skin. Once she does, she’ll be an absolute man-eater, and I pity any man who crosses her path.

“That’s why he can’t keep his eyes off her.”

“She’s… uncomplicated.” I shrug. “You’re incredibly complicated. That tilts the scales out of your favor in a way that’s hard to make them even again. But it’s not because she’s better than you.”

“Complicated how? Because of Tobias?”

“That’s part of it.”

She gives me an irritated look, like she doesn’t quite believe me and thinks I’m making up excuses to dull the blow to her feelings.

“Well… I like a challenge.” She grabs my forearm and hurries me toward another aisle. And when we arrive, I nearly choke.

“Madness, I’m not about to be caught perusing condom options with you. If Tobias comes up here…”

“So be quick. What kind do I need? And do I need to get lube?” She grabs some off a shelf and holds it up. Images of the two of us are flashing through my head and I’m desperately trying to recover.

“Uh… It doesn’t hurt. If you think you want it.”

She chucks it into her basket and then points at the condoms.

“Okay, this is where I always get incredibly confused. All these brands and ribs and sizes. What size do you think he is?”

“Jesus. Okay… I’m sure he has his own. And please don’t ask me to tell you what size dick my friend has, okay?” I start to walk away.

“Well, what size are you? I’m sure it’s similar. You’re only a little smaller than him.” She finally looks up at me, and my face must be saying something because she suddenly looks remorseful. “I mean I didn’t mean that you were smaller than him. I’m sure you’re big. Huge even. Bigger than him I just meant height-wise, you know?”

I scrub a hand over my face and try to remember she means well.

“I think we’re done here.” I turn to walk down the aisle.

“Wait though. Do you have a favorite kind?”

I look back at her. “Why?”

She shrugs and gives me a sheepish look, and then turns back to look at them. “I just—I need to know what kind to buy. I mean, to take with me to Europe.”

I raise a brow at her and point to the kind I usually use. “Those.”

She grabs them and tosses them in her basket alongside the ice cream, pop, and other snacks she’s picked up along the way.

“All right.” She hurries to catch up with me as I walk fast to get out of the aisle. “Aren’t you getting anything?”

“Nah. We’re going out tonight. I’ll get something then.”

“You are? Oh.” She looks a little sad at that, and I feel bad that she’s too young to go with us. I’m tempted to stay home with her again but I know I need distance from her, not to mention Tobias and Xander will get suspicious.

“Look at the bright side, means he won’t be at the grocery store.”
