“Anything for my favorite sister.”

“Your only.”

“For now.”

“Yes, and I think I’m going to have stiff competition from Scarlett.”

“Good thing you’re the ‘only’ while you need something.”

“The opening of West Field… Do you think you could get Quentin to come?”

I grit my teeth. “I think that’ll be a hard sell given the way the two of them have clashed so far this week. Do you really think East wants him there?”

“Oh, I’d guess not. But for one, it would help for the two of them to show a united front even if they’re not feeling it, and for two, Quentin is the novelty. People will turn out to see him. People will definitely turn out to see both of them.”

“I’ll float the idea and see if he’s up for it. I have to hold his feet to a lot of fires, so I’m going to have to see how well he plays first.”

“Well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed he survives you. Or doesn’t if he won’t learn to treat East with some respect. You’ll let me know which fate I should be rooting for?”

“Absolutely.”

Wren turns to look at me before she walks out the door. “And take care of you, yeah? It can’t be easy to have to work with someone professionally like that. Especially not this closely. I don’t want to see you get hurt in the process.”

“I’ll be careful. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from him, it’s that.”

Quentin

“Wantto grab a drink and some food?” Cooper Rawlings pauses by my locker after we wrap up some class time with the coaches.

“Are you sure that won’t get you in trouble with Westfield?” I glance up to make sure he’s not watching us now.

“I’m sure. And if it does, I’ll just tell him I’m doing my little brother a solid, and he’ll forgive me.” Rawlings smirks a little before it fades into a question again.

I played with Cooper’s younger brother and Bea’s ex-boyfriend, Rob Rawlings, in Pittsburgh, and we were pretty good friends, even off the field. Cooper has a reputation for being a little gruff, not too dissimilar from mine, and I guess if I’m going to make a friend on this team it might as well be him.

“As long as it won’t get you in trouble.”

“Nah. There’s a place I like just down a couple of blocks.Give me your number. I’ll text you the address and meet you over there.”

While we waitfor our food, a photo comes through of a half dozen flower arrangements and I smirk.

Madness:

Really?

Not to your liking? I can send more tomorrow.

I’m not in mourning.

I’m sure his future wife will be happy to know.

You’re rude. What if I was actually really crushed about Xander?

I thought we cured you of that.

I thought so too, but then Xander made for a very good shoulder to cry on. Lots of muscles, tattoos… you know—all the things I like.
