“I might have… given in to that particular problem we discussed before.”

“You slept with him?” She grins.

“I don’t know why you’re this happy about it.”

“Well… watching you put everything about your love life on hold while you hurry around fixing Tobias’s problems, A.J.’s problems, and working on this deal... I hate that you never take time for yourself.”

“Hi, pot. It’s me, kettle.” I raise a brow at her.

“I know, but I also don’t have a guy who’s been in love with me for years following me around like a lost puppy, wide-eyed and eager to do anything I want.”

“You sure about that?” I raise my brow higher because I’ve seen the way Cooper was around her at the party.

“Cooper’s just being nice, and it’s nowhere near the same. You and Quentin were engaged. You had this, like, epic Romeo & Juliet love affair thing going.”

“That was so many years ago.”

“And yet…”

“And yet, I can’t ask him for money.”

“Fine.” She sighs but then she lights up again as she studies me. “But how was the sex?”

“Good.”

“Good?”

“Really good. Better than I remember. Better than anyone else. It’s depressing, honestly. I was hoping it would be disappointing. That my younger self had just built it all up in my head, but I hadn’t.”

“Oh, Mads!” She grins so brightly and pats my arm excitedly. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Happy about what? I still have a boyfriend. Quentin’s still a client. Not just a client. A job—the whole job. Money I desperately need, and if the front office finds out about it, I’ll lose my job in seconds and have a hard time finding another if the rumor spreads.”

“It’s not like that.”

“I know that. You know that. But other people won’t know that.”

“Well, I obviously won’t be telling anyone. You don’t think Quentin would?”

“No. I might have lost my mind, but I trust him. He’s been… thoughtful and kind about everything. Not to mention he’s invested in the outcome of all of this too. It’s his career after all.”

“So then nothing to worry about, right?”

“Hopefully not. But it can’t happen again. It was just a one-time thing to get it out of our systems. So we can refocus.”

She laughs, softly at first and then it crescendos until she’s half doubled over. “Oh, I think you really believe yourself when you say that. Don’t you?”

“I mean…”

“Mads. I love you, but you know that’s not going to work.”

“It has to work.”

“Does it? As long as you’re discreet, I don’t see why you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Or why he can’t, anyway.” She smirks at her clever wordplay, and I shake my head at her.

“You’re a menace.”

“I am not! I’m just being supportive. Making sure my partner in crime gets some much-needed time off.”
