Tilting my head, I study him before asking, “Are you a cop? I thought you were a biker or something.”

“Or something,” he says, leaning his elbows on the table. “Stop deflecting. Tell me what you know.”

Dark tattoos cover his forearms and the backs of his hands. With his fingers clasped on the table, I make out the letters on his fingers. He notices my perusal and slowly drags hishands back before crossing his arms over his chest, hands tucked under his biceps.

“Who’s Sara?” I ask.

His eyes darken as he glares at me. “Neverspeak her name again. Do you understand me?”

I flinch at his tone. He scrubs a hand over his face before shaking his head. “Fuck. I’m sorry. I didn’t…” he trails off.

“It’s okay,” I mumble, and instead, I tell him, “I don’t know where the girls are taken from. But they’re kept at a warehouse. It’s about an hour or so from the compound. I don’t know how to get there, they cover my head so I can’t see…” I trail off, wondering what else I can tell him. “It’s in open space. No other buildings or houses around.”

“Good, Isa. This is good,” he encourages.

“The warehouse is divided into three sections. In the first section, he stores guns and ammo. Next is the narcotics chamber,” I pause. “But it’s the final section you’re looking for.” I swallow the lump in my throat and tears well in my eyes when I remember the girls chained to the walls. The fear on their faces, the despair and longing that hovered like a dark cloud. I swipe my hand over my eyes.

“They keep about fifteen girls at a time. They’re chained to the filthy mattresses by their ankles. I’m not sure if they drugged them, but some were so out of it I don’t even think they knew what was happening to them.” I ignore the tears that trickle down my cheeks. “It was my job to clean them… to tend to their wounds, and prepare them for auction.” I turn my head as if I can hide from the sins that stain my skin. “All I wanted was to save them.” I whisper, “I tried…”

“What did it cost you, Isa?”

What did it cost me?

What did it cost me?

What did it cost…

I hunch over, arms wrapped around myself as heavy sobs wrack my body. “Everything.”

Chapter 13

Demon

After her breakdown, Isa was exhausted. Covered with blankets, she’s nuzzled into the bed softly snoring and oblivious to the turmoil in my mind.

This isn’t how it was supposed to go.

This is supposed to be about Sara.

Sara.

Sara.

Sara.

But I can’t ignore the shift that’s taking place. I need to get what I can from her and get her to Liam for relocation. The end is so close. Years of planning, of pain, I won’t risk them for this woman. A woman I should hate on principal because of her fucking name.

And yet…

“She’s drowning, Zain.”Sara’s voice comes seconds before she appears. Her long hair falls over her shoulders, and her eyes are as bright in death as they were in life.

“She’s a means to an end. That’s all.” I speak quietly so as not to wake Isadora.

In the corner of the small hotel room, Azrael stands, hands clasped behind his back. “Your time is almost up, Zain. You have choices to make.”

“See, you keep saying that, but when are you going to get that my choice has already been made. They will sit and watch as the monster they created burns their world to ash.”

From the bed, Isadora stirs and I reach over, placing my hand on her arm and hoping to settle her. When I turn around, Sara’s gone, but Death remains. His eyes follow my every move.“You can’t save everyone, Zain. Trying will only result in losing yourself.” With that ominous fucking statement, and a single blink of my eyes, he disappears too.
