Priest nods and says, “Okay, let’s split up just in case. Bullet and Angel, you head toward the shack, Patch, Demon, and I will head to the garage.” He rubs his hands over his face andlooks at me. “Is there any chance I can talk you into letting her go with them?” he nods at Bullet and Angel, and I narrow my eyes.

Let my woman go into a tunnel without me, where an ambush could be waiting on the other side?I think the fuck not.

Priest sighs. “Right, Isadora’s with us.”

Fucking right she is.

“Let’s go.”

From the tunnel, we climb the ladder that takes us to the huge, eight car garage. “Well, we know they didn’t take a car,” Patch says, as he eyes the bays, each filled with a car that could give a man wet dreams.

Isadora takes stock of the garage before she turns to us with a nod. “This is all of them,” she confirms.

There’s no sign of Santos or his goons, and when Isa pulls open the large, steel doors of the weapons racks, they’ve been picked clean, telling us that wherever they are, they’re heavily armed. “Fuck,” I hiss.

Gunshots ring out through the night. Patch and Priest pull their guns from underneath their cuts. I place a hand on Isadora’s back and quickly move toward one of the Porsches. “Do you know where the keys are?” I ask, an idea forming in my head.

She nods. “They’re all in the cars. Father has them ready in case there’s an emergency.”

“I want you to get in the car, okay? Be ready to leave when I give the signal.” I pull her into me when she begins shaking her head. “Baby, listen to me, I need you fuckin’ safe. I can’t do this and watch you at the same time.”

“But—”

I shake my head. “I made you a promise, remember?”

She nods, tears welling in her eyes. “Make it hurt,” she whispers.

“Make it hurt,” I repeat as I cup her cheek and press a hard kiss to her mouth.

Outside, gunshots continue, and I push Isadora toward the car. “Go, baby.”

“Wait!” Isadora fists my shirt in her hand and hesitates as she twists the fabric in her trembling fingers.

Finally, she looks up at me, eyes pleading.“Lie to me, Zain.”

“What?” I search her face.

“Lie to me and tell me it’s going to be okay…” she pauses. “Lie to me… and tell me you love me.”

Time stops.

Lie to me and tell me it’ll be okay.

Lie to me and tell me you love me.

Lifting my hands to cup her face, I lean down as I bring her mouth to mine. I can’t lie to her and promise it will all be okay. But I can give her something to remember on a rainy day. A day when she’s old and gray, and pictures of the life she made for herself cover the walls of her home. A moment in time to look back on when she needs an escape from reality.

When I finally pull away, I hold my head to hers, breathing in her scent. “I love you,” I say.

Isa’s breath hitches and she nods. “Go.”

Stepping back, I nod as I pull my gun from the waist of my jeans. I stand at the door that leads from the garage and into the mansion.

When the car door closes and Isadora is hidden behind the dark, tinted glass, I shift my focus to Priest and Patch. “You ready for this?” I ask.

They both nod. “Let’s do this.” Patch says.
