“Disgusting,” Caspian said, locking eyes with me. “But damn girl, you tossed that back like a pro.”

“Despite my innocent demeanor, this is not my first tequila shot,” I said, laughing.

“You look anything but innocent,” Caspian said softly, close to my ear.

Suddenly, it was as if the rest of the inhabitants of the bar ceased to be. I felt an invisible cocoon develop around us.

“What do I look like then, if not innocent?” I spoke quietly, leaning close to make sure it was only he who heard me.

He shifted to face me, resting his right arm on the table. “You’re a siren, Miss Young. The type of woman who lures men in and does what she will with the one she chooses.”

“What she will? Do you have an example of this siren-like thing I might do to a man?”

“Don’t tell me you haven’t done it many times.” Caspian said.

“Done what?” My tone changed from flirtatious to intense. He studied me with glittering eyes.

“Made a poor man fall in love with you, only to chew him up and spit him out.”

My mouth fell open. I wasn’t sure whether to be insulted or humored. Did he really see me that way? “Why do you think that?” I asked.

“No one as gorgeous as you hasn’t broken a few hearts along the way.”

“I could say the same to you,” I said, doing my best not to melt like butter on bread right out of the oven.

“Me? Hardly. I’m not the type women want.”

I disagreed but wasn’t about to say that to his face. Instead, I said the opposite. “I can understand why.”

It was his turn to drop his mouth open in surprise. He recoiled slightly. “You can?”

“Sure. You’re a free spirit. An artist. Different than most.”

“Different,” he said, huskily, his expression dour.

I’d hurt him with my carelessness. “Wait, I didn’t mean different was bad. You’re not your typical guy, which I find…” I didn’t continue, realizing I’d gotten myself in too deep already.

“Which you find?” Caspian raised one eyebrow. “Go on. Say it.”

“Which I find…extremely attractive.” Darn, why had I even started this? The drinks had gone to my head, and I was about to make a total fool of myself. Blast Thad and his tequila shot.

“You find me attractive?” Caspian hadn’t taken his eyes off me.

I glanced over to see if Rafferty was listening, but he and Thad had their heads together talking as intimately as we were.

“You know I do. It’s obvious,” I said at last. Why did his eyes have to be so blue? And that disheveled hair, worn a little too long, made me long to run my fingers through it.

He flinched, clearly taken aback by what I’d said. “It has not been obvious to me.”

“Anyway, it doesn’t matter.” I took hold of my empty mug. “Let’s have more beer.”

“I’ll get us another pitcher or two from the bar,” Caspian said. “Under one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“You dance with me,” he said.

“Here? Now?”
