“You’re welcome,” he responds before moving on to the next person, leaving me to scoot the cookies out of Charlie’s reach. He fusses, so I break a petal off and hand him bits and pieces which he chews happily.

Over the next few minutes, I peek over at Alec, all under the guise of dealing with the kids, but again, he’s never looking at me. Killian notices my glances though. He has eyes like a fucking hawk. He catches me watching Alec and frowns, the lines around his lips growing deeper as the afternoon wears on. I don’t know why he’s so upset. I really don’t. Like I said, there’s nothing going on between Alec and me except a few trysts. And even that is using the word loosely.

I’m not even sure Alec likes me. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t.

He hasn’t really gone out of his way to be nice to me. And he most certainly isn’t nice to me in the bedroom when we?—

I let that thought evaporate before it’s fully formed. No, not going there.

Not with this damnable cock cage on. A fucking mistake is what this is. I shouldn’t have ever put it on this morning. I even had to watch a tutorial to figure it out. Spent far too much time on it. And then my sister called, and I ran out the door, unable to take it off. Thank god, I remembered the key.

I pat my back pocket and sigh when I feel the metal press against my ass.

Yeah, I didn’t bake it into cookies. Thank fuck.

When the cookies have been decorated—mine looking a little sad in comparison to everyone else’s, especially Killian’s which look perfect—Helen asks us to hang out a bit for a drink and a small snack.

Lucas looks a bit sheepish since he ate all of the cookies he made and some of the dough as well, but Ollie and he both agree to stay. I almost bow out, but then Helen says, “I can make youa special cocktail and we can sit outside on the porch. I have a playset for the kids, if they want to run all that sugar off.”

I almost decline once more, but once Julia and Jordan hear “playset,” they beg me to stay. And listen, I want to stay. I really do. I like Helen. It has nothing to do with the fact that Alec has decided to stay as well.

That’s not why I’m here.

“Yeah, okay, but I shouldn’t drink with the kids…” My words trail off as Alec walks next to me, suddenly so close as we make our way out of the kitchen. A moment ago, Killian was plastered up against him, whispering something into his ear, and I watched the two of them as something uncomfortable brewed in my gut. But when our gazes collided, I quickly looked away, feeling my cheeks heat.

I’d focused on the kids intently to save face.

And it was a good distraction.

“How about a virgin drink,” Alec says softly once we’re all out on the porch. My dick gives a painful twitch, and I wince. “What do you want?”

Shifting on my feet, I nod. “Yeah, okay. Whatever you think is fine. Just no alcohol.”

Alec turns his dark gaze from me and bends down to ask the kids what they want. The sight does nothing to warm my heart toward him. Not a single thing.

“Juice!” Julia says.

“Hot chocolate!” Jordan bellows, and Alec stands up with a smile.

“Alright. On it.”

As he moves away from me, his hand trails across my lower back, and I bite my lip to hold in a moan. This is so inappropriate, especially with the kids right here. He shouldn’t touch me. He fucking shouldn’t.

Goddamnit. My dick hurts. I need to take this cock cage off. Stat.

“Ollie, hey, can you watch Charlie and the kiddos for a second? I have to use the bathroom.”

Ollie makes grabby hands for the baby as I hand him to my friend. “Be right back,” I say as I make my way back into the house, asking Helen where the bathroom is as soon as I see her.

I think my dick is gonna fall off if I don’t get this damn thing off ASAP. I nearly jog for the bathroom, my eyes colliding with Alec who’s in the kitchen with Killian, the two of them talking softly once more. I don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about, but they’re always talking so intimately, like they’re sharing a secret no one else can know about.

When our eyes meet, Alec’s gaze darkens, and I turn my head and speedwalk to the small bathroom at the end of the hallway.

As soon as the door is closed, and I’m alone, I brace my hands on the edge of the sink and peer up at my reflection in the mirror.

“Goddamnit,” I mutter as I try and regain my composure. But it’s not working and with trembling hands, I pull the key from my jeans pocket and set it on the counter. First things first. Gotta get this cage off me.

“You’re so fucking stupid,” I tell my reflection, my fingers on the button of my jeans.
