Fuck. I don’t want to tell him what’s going on. Despite what Killian hissed and shouted at me last night, Jude doesn’tneedto know anything. It would only hurt him if I told him the truth.

And I don’t want to hurt him anymore.

My face falls into my hands, and I sigh. “Goddamnit.”

Just as those words fall from my mouth, my phone pings.

My eyes swivel down to it and my heart skips a beat when I see that it’s Jude.

I swipe at the message and read it.

Jude:

Want to come hang out with me and my roommates tonight? We’re going axe throwing.

I stare at my phone. “What the fuck?” I ask myself and then smile because of course they are. They’re the weirdest guys ever.

Me:

I’ve never been.

Jude:

Oh, well then you have to come. I can show off my skills.

I beam at my phone like a lovesick fool and then place it facedown on my desk. Need to get my shit done early so I can head over and maybe make out with him a bit before we leave.

God, I miss him. It’s only been a few hours, but I miss his fucking face.

This is a goddamn problem.

“I didn’t realize there would be so many people here,” I say when I meet Jude and his friends at the axe-throwing place. My hopes of making out with him before we got here were shot down when he told me he was going to catch a ride with Ollie instead of me. Imight have sulked a bit while getting ready, but then again, I get to see him now, get to touch him.

I can make out with him later.

Life can’t get any better than that.

I glance around the open field. The axe-throwing place is an outdoor setup on the outskirts of town with large targets situated a few feet apart across a wide lawn. The men working here all have long beards and cutoff flannel shirts. They look like they chop down trees for a living. My eyes swivel from the intimidating specimens and land on the food trucks lining the sidewalk. Well, shit, they serve food and drinks here. And axes and alcohol don’t sound like a good mix. Not that these guys seem to mind. They’re already in line, grabbing drinks and plates of food, like they didn’t just eat dinner.

“Yeah, well I told you we were all going to go,” Jude says with a smile and then glances around. When he sees no one looking, he leans over and presses a kiss on my cheek. I feel the press of his lips on my skin all the way down to my stomach. My fingers reach out and brush against his hand, our pinkies sliding together. In the distance, near one of the food trucks, I see Jai watching us, his countenance drawn inward like he’s about to fold into himself. Lucas is next to him, frowning down at him, his large arms folded across his chest.

Shit. I never meant to make anyone feel bad. Never meant to take someone that didn’t belong to me. But then again, I didn’t think Jude would ever be into me. I know several years ago, I had what many would call a glow-up, which has made me almost unrecognizable, but the insecure me still resides in my mind. To me, I’m still the squat fifteen-year-old with acne and big round glasses.

It’s not my fault Jude likes me instead of him, right? I mean, I didn’t plan for this to happen, it just did. He literally fell into my lap…well, more like my cock.

I peel my gaze away from Jai and Lucas and focus back on Jude, who is looking shy and so fucking cute. Jai is immediately forgotten and my attention is solely focused on the man next to me. It should be pathetic, but I can’t quite help how I feel.

“Well, anyways. It doesn’t matter. Glad you came. And don’t worry about these guys. We all suck at this. None of us are any good, except Lucas. And well…Wesley. Oh, and Jai. Actually, Jai is really good.”

“Shit,” I say, watching as they all step up and each takes a turn. They hit the target like fucking pros, not even winded after each throw. Even nerdy Simon, who stands there looking like he’s calculating the velocity or some shit, hits the wooden target like he planned it. Like it’s simple. Or a science. But it’s not. It’s not fucking simple.

I stand with that damn axe in my hand and try to aim, to throw it, to hit the goddamn target, but it misses by a mile. Doesn’t even get close.

I hear Jai huff quietly, sounding like he’s laughing, and I glower at him. He shrinks back into Lucas, who puts his hands around his shoulders protectively, and then I turn my gaze to Jude who is beaming at me.

“Not bad, Alec,” he says and then steps up and completely dominates the field, hitting the target right in the middle. My dick jumps watching how good he looks throwing axes, being all manly and shit, and then I remember who he is. He’s Jude Martin.

The popular guy in school, the jock. The kid who played every sport there was. The one with the six-pack in high school, with all the friends and the attention of all the hot girls.
