He pounded on the door of the vet clinic. He could hear a football game blasting through the apartment on the second floor. “Ellis! Get down here.”

A head popped out the window ringed with wild, curly hair. “Where is he?”

“Who?”

“The injured horse? I told you that you’d ride Bonanza into the ground.”

“I didn’t injure a horse. I need to go up the hill.”

Aiden fought a sting of ancient shame. This was the compromise they’d worked out when his control of the wolf got a little iffy. The wards on his house kept the beast contained, but if he wanted to wander anywhere else on the land, he needed babysitters who could put him down.

Ellis said nothing, just disappeared. Aiden heard him clatter down the stairs, and the door swung open moments later.

“Welcome home, by the way,” the man said as he stuffed a baseball cap from West Virginia University over his curls. He was wearing plaid pajama pants and a white tank top with untied boots.

“That’s what you’re wearing to my dramatic confrontation?”

“I’m missing the third quarter to help your ass, so enough with the runway critiques.”

“Where’s your brother?”

Ellis spun around like he would find him in the hedgerows. “Oh, come on, you’re not gonna go furry. Let’s go. We’re winning.”

A part of Aiden wanted the kid scared. A part of him just hated babysitters, so he agreed.

“You heard what happened today?” he asked.

Ellis missed a step. “Is that what this is about?”

Aiden nodded once. “They hid the witch at my house.”

“Clearly, I didn’t hear all of what happened today. What witch?”

“They kidnapped a witch and trapped her in my house.”

“Maybe we should find Nash or somebody to come with us,” Ellis said, slowing a little.

Aiden shook his head. “I’ll be fine.”

“Anybody.”

“We’re already here.” Aiden turned down the front walk of a prominent cabin a half mile from the stables.

Do not eat them,he warned the wolf and pounded on the door.

“Who is it?”

Aiden rolled his eyes. They could all hear and smell him. They had known he was coming from a hundred feet away. “Open up.”

He banged on the door again.

Someone moved in the living room, and someone else scrambled away. He didn’t have time for this.

He kicked in the door and shoved inside.

“That’s a challenge!” his Uncle Nathan said from his spot on the living room couch. He was also watching the game. Hewore overalls and nothing else, and his beard nearly reached his navel.

“Buck!” Aiden shouted, ignoring the old man. They’d already said everything there was to say to each other over and over and over again.
