“You okay?” he asked when he got his breath back.

“Dandy,” she said, rubbing the back of her head.

“No luck?” he asked as he climbed to his hands and knees, though he knew.

“With a damn month of study, maybe.” She took a deep breath. “Nothing’s changed.”

He gaped at her. Everything had changed. She could use his magic. They shared a connection he’d never found with anyone. She was hilarious, feisty, and perfect.

And every time he touched her, she ended up on the ground.

Goldie marched away from the barrier, fighting tears, which were completely intolerable. She did not cry.

She did not cry. She did not run. She did not wear plaid. This had been an unprecedented week, and she was tired of it.

“I’ll go talk to Buck,” Aiden said, sounding like he’d rather get his prostate examined.

Goldie felt her rage bank into a cold fury at what that idiot did to the both of them. “I’llgo talk to Buck.”

He stopped. “No?”

“Why not?”

“He kidnapped you and left you for me.” He froze. “He left you for me.”

Goldie shuddered, finally understanding why they’d dropped her in Aiden’s house. “He thought you’d kill me.”

“When my wolf— Iamgoing to kill him.”

He was on the verge of shifting.

“Oh no. You do not get to play rescuer on your high horse.”

Aiden looked insulted. “I would never risk a horse.”

She bit her lip, hiding her smile. “This is mine to do.”

She glanced back at the mare she’d ridden out here. She’d almost gotten the hang of it before she ended up on the forest floor, but she couldn’t go through that again right now.

“You had your chance,” she said.

“Are you talking to the horse or me?”

“To the horse. To Buck. Nobody’s hauling me anywhere again.”

“Does that mean you’re getting back on that horse or never getting on one again?” Aiden asked with a smile that flashed so quickly she couldn’t be sure she’d seen it. “Because you know the saying about getting back on a horse.”

She stared at the mare. “No.”

“There’s a reason it’s become a cliché. You need to get back up there.”

She eyed the animal. Beauty didn’t look too huge from the ground but seemed to double in size when she was perched on her back.

Goldie sighed and marched to the mare. Deliberately, she put her hand on the horse’s shoulder. “I forgive you.”

Aiden cleared his throat.
