“How doIget out of the trailer?”

Kathleen sobered. “There’s one door. The rest is impenetrable. That’s the whole point.”

Goldie nodded once. She would have to get him in there, swing around so she was nearest the door, and close it on him, a shifter in the prime of his life who could shift in less than a second and who led with poisonous fangs. “No problem. I can do that.”

“When?”

“Aiden writes in the morning.”

“He doesn’t know about this?” Kathleen asked.

“I don’t want him anywhere near this. I don’t want his wolf anywhere near this.”

“Early tomorrow then.”

“Is Buck going to be up that early?”

Kathleen smiled. “I can get him up that early.”

“How?”

“I’ll tell him I found his horse.”

“What is this about everybody having a horse?”

“Everybody has a horse! And every child gets their own horse in the pack if they want. It’s a whole process. They have to match. Buck has never received one.”

Goldie couldn’t help thinking he never should.

“But that’s just to get him to the stables, mind. You have to get him in the trailer yourself.”

“Deal.”

“Now that you’re here, you could help match folks to their horses. Scribes are good at that sort of thing.”

Goldie frowned. “Now that I’m here?”

Kathleen pivoted to her. “You’re not going to leave him alone, are you? He’s been waiting all his life for you.”

“I’m still trapped. I can’t…”

“Tomorrow you’ll fix that, so that will be all right then.”

Would this make everything all right? Somehow, she didn’t think so. There was a voice in the back of her mind sounding the alarm that this would make everything worse. At the very least, she should have trusted Aiden to help her. She ignored it. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Goldie frowned as Kathleen plucked a bottle out of a stack on the coffee table. “Take this. Revenge is just sweeter with the right nails.”

Goldie was worried that her genius plot to take back her power was already foiled the next morning when she couldn’t get out of the house. She’d forgotten the wards were still locked against anything magical, including her.

She dragged Aiden out of bed to escort her through them, and she resisted telling him they would have to fix that before she moved in. She was used to running roughshod over anyone’s objections, but this didn’t seem like the time to make that kind of declaration. Especially because she was going to do temporary harm to his kin.

“I can come,” he said with bleary, unfocused eyes.

Her heart ached at his offer. She almost told him yes. It felt wrong to do this without him. It felt like a betrayal, even though she was doing this for him.

She just couldn’t risk him.
