“Nothing.”

“So why didn’t you?—”

“Believe it or not, I don’t actually want to eat my family. It feels weirdly incestuous. And disgusting. No offense, but I’ve tasted your blood.”

Aiden started for the kitchen. Buck was a shifter and a teenager; Aiden didn’t want him hungry.

“So what happens now?” Buck asked. He hadn’t moved from the foyer.

“Nathan declared himself alpha?”

“After the fight. He declared he beat the strongest of us.”

“I’m a submissive wolf. I’m not even close to the strongest of us.”

“Yeah, but you’re the meanest damn fighter we have. After Nathan took you down, none of the dominants wanted to try him. I’m not gonna try.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’re never shifting, ever.” Aiden cleared his throat. “I mean, thank you. I appreciate it.”

“So what happens in the morning when Nathan comes back, and we are still alive?”

Aiden smiled, trying to put a brave face on it for the kid. Nathan would probably kill both of them. If he really was the alpha, he could compel the other wolves to help. Hell, they might sign up enthusiastically. “You should go. There are no wards. You could get off the land.”

“Where the hell am I gonna go? I ain’t been nowhere. “

“You’re gonna have to finish growing up, like, today. Get to town and get a place to sleep. I can give you some money.” Not enough. He didn’t keep much on hand here, but it would help. “Find some work. Don’t come back.”

“And leave you to face him alone? Hell no.”

Aiden’s jaw dropped. “What?”

“You’re pack. We shouldn’t have left you here alone with your wolf, and I definitely ain’t leaving you to die now.”

“And I can’t let you stay.”

“No offense, but you can’t stop me,” Buck said. He ended the conversation by walking past Aiden into the dining room, where he stopped short. “You got rid of all your furniture?”

Aiden smiled quietly. “It wasn’t mine anymore.”

Buck twisted around. “You really were going to live as a wolf in an empty house.”

Aiden put his hands on his hips. “Because nowhere in the history of the world is there another dining room table that I could buy. I didn’t say I was giving up the idea of a table.”

“Right.”

If Buck thought he was that much of an alien or a crazy person, he really should have spent more time with the pup. And now he would never have that chance.

His wolf snarled at him as Buck wandered into the kitchen and opened the fridge.

For once, the beast was right. What was Aiden thinking? He was giving up before the fight even began.

Last time, it had been Buck and Nathan against him. This time it would just be him against Nathan while the kid hid in a closet somewhere. He’d have to put some fencing in front of the closet to keep Nathan out.

He paused.

Now he’d been thinking too much like a wolf. He stared into the foyer where Goldie’s first booby traps had hit him.

“We’re gonna need a lot more than feathers,” he said slowly.
