“Uh-huh.Shower.”

Another few kisses and nips and Joel was pulling me to my feet before I had the chance to take him again.

ISAIAS

Zahria’s not-so-voluntary request was finally completed. The job had consisted of setting the record straight with Ben and the Grimsby, Vermont authorities, which included showing up in person to prove that I hadn’t just run away with an unclaimed Omega. During Kieran’s pregnancy, I had been feeding Zahria information regarding Michael and everything that had transpired before that incident at her request, not that I knew much. The only reason I was allowed to show upafterKieran had birthed our precious boys rather than being summoned immediately wasbecausemy Omega was pregnant.

Apparently, where the law was concerned, Omegas were only important when they were carrying the future generation.

Our little lie from last year had only opened a bag of worms that strangely enough hadn’t come back to bite me or my pack in the ass. Instead, the extensive series of questions revolved more around Michael and if I knew who he was and where he wasoriginally from. For the past two days, I had been in and out of Kieran’s previous home, explaining what had happened down to the last detail that I could remember.

Every moment away from my mates and our children, however, became more painful as the hours passed. It was the first time I had been away this long since Kieran had been pregnant.

I had never seen someone look so broken when I stared into Kieran’s eyes after being in Michael’s kitchen last year, not even when it came to Terrence and dealing with Austin. What I wanted to know was what pitiful reason the goddess had for testing my pack like this. It was constant tragedy after tragedy with a sprinkle of good times in between. Kieran’s pregnancy had been the highlight of our lives, building his nest, and watching him cling to us in a way he hadn’t before.

The birth of Elias and Leo brought another round of nightmares that seemed to fracture our budding relationship. Between almost losing Kieran and finding out our babies had presentedat birthrather than the usual age of thirteen, meant that we had a very, very long road ahead of us. And with Michael free again, I couldn’t imagine the fear and stress that Kieran was going through. He was trying to be strong for us, regardless of how much it hurt him. Terrence and Joel were perfect for his ever-changing moods as I tried to anticipate what our Omega needed whilst also heeding the doctor’s warnings.

This is normal. He’ll need some time to adjust. The mood changes may be hard to navigate but it’s his way of coping.

The worst part was that I couldn’t even do anything. Especially not from nearly 1000 miles away.

“How do you know Michael?”

A strained sigh left my throat as I tried to weather my expression so that the detective standing on the other side of the table wouldn’t see how annoyed I was with this interrogation. “Idon’t know him. He’s my Omega’s…” I stopped, trying to find the right way to explain it. He wasn’t Kieran’sanythingas far as I was concerned. “He knew Kieran.” Straightening my shoulders, I ran my hands through my hair before meeting the detective’s gaze.

Detective Mora bristled beneath my stare, puffing out his chest to seem more intimidating but he was several inches shorter than me as a Beta and he had such a childish look to his face that it was all for naught. The kid couldn’t be older than 20 or 21. “We just need to know why he was here.”

I bit back what I truly wanted to say. This detective wasn’t even the same one from this morning nor the one from last night. It was painfully obvious that they weren’t all from the little town of Grimsby, either. Which meant that whatever Michael was into had to be a lot bigger than attacking Kieran. “I have no idea why he was here. He’s a selfish, crazy bastard who attacked my mate. Michael spread lies so that he could return home with my Omega and then suffered the consequences. Is there somethingyou’renot telling me?”

I had no status here. No business demanding answers but I was tired of the run around. Their presence made it seem like I should be terrified of Michael trying to hurt my Omega again. The problem was that there wouldn’t be a second time.

If Michael so chose to fuck around, this time he would find out.

He would be on the floor, ripped to shreds either by my hands or Kieran’s. Just the thought of my perfect Omega doling out his own sense of justice had my cock instantly hard, fantasies of fucking him afterward to reclaim a man that I couldn’t dream of being without filling my head.

“Sir?”

I cleared my throat and stuffed the thoughts away. Silence hung heavy in the room when I realized I had been growling, my anger choosing to rear its ugly head. “Sorry. Look, it’s been astressful year and I’m thankful you’re looking into whatever this is but my Omega just had our sons and I would really like to get back to him.”

“Has he been claimed?”

My brows furrowed. In no world would they need to know that.

“Isaias?” Zahria popped her head into the interrogation room, saving me from answering. I assumed that her timing was on purpose as she slid in next to me, placing a small briefcase on the desk, and then setting a freshly brewed cup of coffee on the table. “Mora, he’s not under arrest. Ease up. You’ve all been grilling him for information he doesn’t have. And I told you that.” Her stern voice had the Beta stepping back. “I let you guys have your time. Now, it’s mine. Let the Mason department know I cooperated and that they owe me one.”

Detective Mora nodded before excusing himself from the room.

“Zahria, I love you. I do but what the fuck?”

“Look, I had no idea they were going to grill you but-”

I grabbed the coffee she placed in front of me and took a large swig before grimacing. It wasn’t nearly as good as my grandmother’s nor any other mom-and-pop shop she could have gotten it from. Still, it was warm. “The Mason precinct? That’s halfway across the country, Zahria. What is going on because I feel like it’s not really about Kieran.”

Zahria blew out a deep breath, resting back in her seat like we were just old friends from ranger school again. Her hands dangled at her sides, her eyes unfocusing. For the first time, I could see the stress this case had put on her, although I still didn’t knowwhy.“Not entirely, no. Michael was released on probation but he’s already gotten into a few other altercations.” She sat up and pulled a file from the briefcase. I hastily opened it to find what she was talking about. In plain words, Michaelhad attacked another Omega but this one hadn’t been as lucky as Kieran. Her Alpha had then retaliated as he was allowed to, roughing up Michael who still hadn’t learned his lesson. There were a handful of other instances, the rest of the Omegas surviving with minor injuries. And it was alwaysOmegasthat were the ones attacked. “There seems to be a method to his madness but we can’t figure out what it is. We just know he’s after Omegas.”

The rage was back. “And I’m out here, hours away from my family?” I clenched my fists, the paper crunching beneath my anger. To think that Michael could be lurking around my house, trying to once again steal my Omega, my pack, my happiness,my boys…
