Page 43 of Craving Vengeance

Drenched in Ada’s blood, the woman alive but passed out in the chair, I meandered over to the spout at the edge of our warehouse to wash off. There wasn’t just blood on my hands but bits of skin and tissue that I hadn’t planned on acquiring. I had kind of gotten lost in the craziness, my anger taking over. I didn’t usually let it take a front seat but that woman pissed me off and Umar had said style counted.

The cold water felt good along my body although it was doing nothing for the crimson stains coating my clothes. I’d have to change before walking into the house but that was a minor issue. We had to find Ernest and Umar, drag them into the same place as Ada, and then call the fucking police or SWAT or whoever would listen before calling it a day.

I didn’t believe for a moment that we had seen the last of that family, which is why we had everything in place to disappear the moment we ended this shit. My eyes locked on something moving outside the window, my brows furrowing as I realized a car was racing up the rocky pavement. No one knew this place existed. It’s why we picked it. I frowned and looked over at Ada, the bitch trying to smile.

No fucking way.

“Guys, we have a fucking problem! They’re here!”

Dmitri pushed off the wall. “That’s not possible.”

“Somehow Ada got the word out. She’s got backup plans for backup plans. Shit. You think she’s working with them?”

Valentyn shook his head as he pulled out his gun and cocked it back to check for bullets. “Doubt it. I think she’s just double-dipping her toes like she always does. We’re not fucking ready for whatever they’re bringing.”

I didn’t want to but escape was our best option. Ada was in no condition to move and whatever Umar had in store for her, he could do because the alternative was dying here and leaving Rhys and the kids alone. I wouldn’t be able to keep my promise to Rhys about Ada but in the grand scheme of things, we didn’t have time to finish the original plan.

I raced to the back of the warehouse, Valentyn and Dmitri moving with me but not before an explosion rocked the walls.

“What the fuck?”

Sirens met my ears but I knew for a fuck that the explosion hadn’t come from that source.

“The police are here too?” I exclaimed. We brought people out here so wedidn’thave to deal with the fucking police but now theyandUmar were here. Two opposing forces. Fucking hell, we were going to get massacred for this shit.

Ernest was first inside, cackling about how fucked we were, his fingers dragging along the cool metal of my knives. I wanted to rip them away from him. He had no business touching them but I also wondered why he was so fucking calm, standing here when the distant sounds of sirens hung in the balance. “Oh, don’t worry about them. They’re not coming here.”

“Where’s your dad?” I spat.

“Right here.”

Umar stepped inside, his eyes falling on the poor form of Ada and how we had left her. “Ah, that’s a very pretty picture. Unfortunately, it’s not exactly what I was looking for. Things have changed a little and I really do need that fucking program.” Liam stood at his side, eyes void of any warmth from the first time I had seen him. He looked like a completely differentperson, like Umar’s personal demon. This was truly a fucked family affair.

My eyes widened at the implication that someone was going to show up at the house and take Rhys away.Shit.Everything moved in slow motion from there – bullets flying, another explosion, screams, and the sound of a body falling. I looked to my right; Valentyn was gone. I was not going to lose my family to this bullshit as I unearthed another gun and started shooting. I didn’t care what I hit at this point, just so long as those three felt the fullest extent of my wrath. We weren’t going to fucking die here. I wouldn’t let it happen.

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I continued firing, even after my gun was shooting blanks, even after the firefight had stopped and it was just me screaming into the abyss, Dmitri pulling me away. I shook in his arms, the man trying to calm me with his touch. “Hey, Gia. Snap out of it. Val needs a hospital and if we don’t move, those sirens thatweren’t for us, will very well be for us in a minute.”

I cried out, looking down at our protector, the pooling blood from his chest and thigh gutting me. I couldn’t lose him. I refused to.

Chapter forty-one

RHYS

Ten hours.Ten. Hours. Not one fucking call or text or anything to tell me that my men were okay. They were supposed to rip Ada a new one and then hand her over to the police before we started our new life. Pacifying Tia and Paval with sweets and cartoons had been my saving grace as I passed the length of the living room, checking my phone every few seconds to see if someone had called.

I sent countless messages, none of them opened.

Hey, what’s going on?

~

Where are you guys?

~

I heard sirens. Was that you?
