“I don’t know what to tell you, Arlo. I guess those people are losing their sight. We don’t need a fire to bathe.”

The redhead growled. Kaida shifted uncomfortably on her feet as she felt herself getting wet. There was something about these four that was causing her body to react in this way. She knew she reacted a little similarly around Enzo, but this was much stronger than what she felt for him.

Seriously, did the rejection just break my damn brain? What the hell is going on with me?

“Who the fuck would lie about something like that? You five were on the beach when you weren’t supposed to be there. Either get the fuck back to your houses, or we’ll throw you in our basement for a week.”

The redhead stepped closer to them. Kaida felt her body wanting to take a step closer to them. She stopped herself before she moved an inch.

“And who the fuck is that? I don’t know this one. Do any of you?” the redhead asked the other three.

“No,” they said in unison.

Remy looked back to Adrien for a second. Kaida saw Adrien give her a nod, and Kaida knew it was to give Remy permission to tell them who she was.

“This is Kaida Hilmir. She was recently rejected and dropped here by her mate. We found her out here. We were just bringing her back with us so she had a place to stay.”

“She’s a dragon,” the brunette deadpanned as he locked eyes with Kaida.

There was ice in his tone and venom in his stare. Kaida’s breath caught in her throat as she realized that this one knew exactly what she could be: A Storm dragon… and the people that they would all hate.

“Is what Beckett said true? Are you from the kingdom of Dragaal?”

The redhead’s tone was threatening, and he took several steps forward. Kaida noticed that he towered over Remy, who was at least a foot and a half shorter than him. Kaida wished that she had a way to lie and get away with it, but it was evidently clear that she was from Dragaal. Her scent alone would tell them she was a dragon, and she was positive that these four would know every dragon here in the Outcast Lands.

Kaida gulped before answering, “I am.”

“Ha, and I thought the Storm dragons didn’t reject their mates. They would want their numbers to continue to increase, and a Fated pair has a higher chance of conceiving.”

“Blaze, all you are doing is scaring the shit out of her. It’s not like she made the decision to send our families out here,” the black haired said, stepping in.

“Shut up, Arlo,” Blaze snapped. “There had to be a reason the Stormy rejected his mate. What’s wrong, dragon? Why did your mate reject you?”

Kaida tried to take a couple of deep breaths to calm herself, but her voice was still shaky when she answered him. “I am dragonless.”

Blaze laughed…hard. The other three sniggered with him. Kaida felt tears welling inside her eyes. She repeatedly told herself not to cry in front of them.

“I’d love to say that the Stormy that rejected you proved how stupid you Royal Twats are, but I can get behind that decision.”

Remy growled and took a step toward Blaze. Kaida grabbed her hand before she got close enough to take a swing, but then Kaida heard the crackling of magic around her. She already knew that Adrien and Azulia had their magic charged up to back up Remy. As much as she loved that these girls were ready to throw down over her, Kaida did not think now was the time for it.

Blaze looked unfazed at Remy stepping toward him. He rolled his eyes and looked at her with a bored expression. “Like a Lycan is a match for a Dragon. I’d squash you before their magic touched me.” He looked at the rest of them and then locked eyes with Kaida. “Get back to your homes. Stay off my fucking beach. Next time I won’t be so nice.”

Giant red wings burst from his back. With one powerful thrust of the wings, Blaze was airborne. The other three’s wings were out and followed behind Blaze. Kaida found herself watching them as they flew toward the small town.

Remy jerked her wrist out of Kaida’s hands, “Each time those dickheads show up, I just want to punch them all in their faces. I finally had my shot at doing it, and you stopped me. I thought you were cool, but I was wrong.”

“Lay off, Rem. Kaida already had a rough night. You should be thanking her anyway. Blaze would have killed you without a second thought,” Azulia stated as she patted Kaida’s shoulder. “Don’t give his words more weight than what they are. He’s just an asshole. It comes with the territory of being ruled by the Ember element.”

Kaida nodded. She didn’t trust herself not to break down in sobs if she spoke. Her chest burned more as if the rejection had just happened again, and she just wanted to curl up in bed. The girls ushered her to start moving again and made their way toward the town. Since it was an island, Azulia used her Tidal magic to enable them to walk on water. As they did, Kaida counted her blessings that they found her and immediately accepted her into their group.

I guess I should focus on the little things. It could be worse. I could be sitting on that beach, freezing and starving right now. Tomorrow is a new day.

Sixteen

True to their word, Adrien and Azulia created a small room for her that branched off their home. The house was a bit bigger than the other girls’ since they chose to live together. They managed to convince the Fearsome Four to give them the small patch of land to make the houses and built them behind a fence. This was so they could put a spell on the fence so an alarm would be tripped if someone came onto the property. It turned out that Adrien was supplying the lands with potions and small spelled artifacts to people here, so the Four couldn’t really argue or not to give it to her. Azulia came and just brought more business by helping Adrien’s business with her magic.

Their land was off to the side once they reached the soil to the Outcast Lands. The land was considered “barren,” so the Four didn’t think Adrien would be able to do much with it. Azulia fixed the land with her Terrain magic and helped grow ingredients for the potions. After their business grew, it was difficult for anyone to really argue with them about anything they did. If anyone caused an uproar, they just wouldn’t supply them. Kaida was impressed with the fact that they were, obviously, powerful with their magic and also powerful businesswomen.
