Page 12 of His Human Runaway

I’m not as quiet as Rake but I also enjoy the occasional fire games and ale. I’m in between the two of them, but we all get along. My two brothers, Burl, and the local sheriff are my closest friends.

None of us have mates. Although at one point we all thought Rake was going to take a local female as his mate. They were pleasure mates for years prior and seemed serious, but she broke up with Rake and mated with someone she met on a trip out of town. The male was a military veteran who moved here to stay and they’re now bounds on a neighboring ranch and have two offspring. The whole episode wasn’t as difficult for Rake as it would seem, proving that indeed the female was right—she and Rake were only temporary pleasure mates and not two Hyrrokin who should walk to the courthouse together. And therefore, she went and found her real bound.

I’ve never been with anyone who I could see turning into anything real. In fact, I’m still a virgin. I’ve taken females on dates, but never went so far as to form any attachments that would lead to pleasure mating. I’ve been attracted to many females, but not enough to bother. I want only to be with the female who will be my bound and I haven’t found her yet, nor was concerned about that until recently.

I glance back at the stairs, to the location of the guest room. This might be the strongest reaction I’ve ever had for a female. Each time I’m close to her my cock thickens in my trousers and I constantly have to battle the need to touch her, which is most unusual.

And her scent…her scent in my lungs is exhilarating.

Originally, I went to university and studied law but hated it, missing the community, the land and the animals I was raised amongst. Rake, as the eldest, was set to inherit and Ineeded to find a different occupation, as did Sten. But then our father bought property from cousins who had no heirs so that land would stay in our extended family. The property was divided into thirds and it became my duty to stay and work this additional land. I happily complied. Now I’m at a place in life where I’m settled. I have my job, my purpose for my whole life right here and almost everything I need.

The only thing that’s missing is my own mate and family. Now that the house is finished and I’ve recently moved in, it is strange living in such a large domicile, alone. As I was building it, and I was trying to envision who it was for, I thought of a potential mate, but no one specific. I’d already met every unmated female in town because we grew up together and there isn’t anyone in the whole community who I can envision as my future bound. When I was away at university I met a few females to date, but again these all morphed into friendship only.

This is why I decided to try and meet with females beyond my own local community. I plan on vacationing in different towns and locations of Tarvos. Although finding a mate who wasn’t born here and who’d be willing to give up civilized comforts to live in the wilderness with me forever might prove difficult. It’s happened several times that a local male or female would travel elsewhere, fall in love, and their new bound would claim to love the idea of living here in the wildlands, only to arrive and hate this lifestyle. Then they’d have to move back together to the main city on Tarvos because the new mate was so unhappy in such an isolated, small-town location.

But that isn’t an option for me, I can’t move for anyone because this is my inheritance.

I have a vacation planned next month on the main city of Tarvos of all places. But now that I’ve met Mica, I feel uncomfortable at the thought of trying to meet other unmated females.

I hear a knock on the door.

Sometimes my brothers arrive in all-terrain vehicles. Other times they arrive on their riding beasts. I never know. They must’ve taken their vehicles because they’re here sooner than I thought. Although at least they listened when I said to wait a few hours because there’s been enough peace and quiet for Mica to sleep undisturbed. My brothers can be very loud.

I walk over to the door and pause to look up at the stairs again.

The idea of them coming here doesn’t sit well with me.

I can take care of this on my own. I let out a disgruntled exhale because I probably could use their help in keeping her safe. My property is in the middle and they both surround me. Yeah, I need their help.

I open the front door and my younger brother smiles. “Good evening,” he yells, loud and boisterous as usual. Sten is taller and thinner than the rest of us, taking more after our mother’s side of the family.

And then he steps aside. Rake lumbers up and gives me a chin lift and continues inside. Rake is slightly shorter, but also much more massive.

“Where is she?” Sten questions as he enters.

I shut the door behind them. “How did you find out so quickly that I’d rescued a human female?” I question, even though I know the answer.

“Burl told us everything.”

My parents took Burl in as an orphaned teenager and he’s worked for us ever since. Burl is the same age as Rake and the two of them should be close, but strangely Burl and I became best friends even though he’s five years my senior. He chose to remain with me when our parents broke up the family business into three equal parts with the additional land. The other twohave always been annoyed that I got Burl in the bargain. But it’s their own fault they weren’t nice enough to him.

The only problem is that since Burl knows my brothers and parents so well, he tells on me all the time.

“Where is the human?” Rake demands.

“She’s sleeping upstairs.”

Sten looks surprised. “The human you rescued is staying here with you in a guest room? I thought since she’s your employee she’d be in the…”

“Yes, of course she is. Where else could she stay on the ranch? I can’t leave her in the barracks with the other males. This way I can keep an eye on her and make sure she’s safe.”

“Of course she’s safe. Why wouldn’t she be safe?” Sten questions.

Rake grunts. “She could stay with Burl in the same room you had in his cabin.”

I let out a growl of disapproval. “Not happening.”

They both stare at me with quizzical expressions.
