Page 16 of Her Wicked Men

She was family now, and they knew it.

“We have two… men… carrying…” garbled speech came over Hank’s radio, and I sucked in a breath.

Men? What were they carrying?

“Repeat,” Hank barked into his radio as he somehow managed to keep a few paces behind me.

This time, the voice was clear, plunging a knife through the core of my being as true fear lodged deep inside me.

“Two men trespassing, carrying what appears to be the woman.”

The woman.

Our woman.

“Fuck!” I snarled, thundering forth now, not caring who heard me coming as more gunfire rose up ahead.

“Returning fire,” came over the radio.

“Tell them to cease!” I ordered, and Hank barked it over the radio with urgency that promised death if there was failure to obey.

He knew what we’d do if anything happened to her. He’d seen Callum, and we’d make any man pay, no matter who they worked for.

Panic. That’s what I was feeling as my chest tightened, my fingers wrapped around my glock like my life depended on it.

I needed to get to Vee, to save her, protect her.

Who the hell had her?!

I yanked my phone from my pocket, some semblance of logic and thought breaking through the bloody haze that was settling over my mind as I speed dialed Zane.

“Someone’s here, they have Vee,” I barked when he answered on the second ring.

“I’m on my way back.” His voice was deathly low, a shudder rolling down my spine at the underlying tone.

I’d just poked the lethal viper coiled up, and he was going to strike.

I’d not heard that deep, feral tone many times over the years, but I recognized it in an instant.

It made ice flood my veins, but a relief and gratitude joined it.

Zane was with me on this. We’d get her back safe.

“Tell Kieran,” I rasped before ending the call, my focus on the few gunshots still ringing out just ahead.

From the direction we were headed, Zane could cut them off if he was headed back. I knew which way he always went out for drives, and I was grateful for taking notice of that.

I threw myself behind a tree as I spied our men taking cover, shots ringing out.

“They have the woman, it seems to be the Moretti,” one of the guards called out from where he was crouched down to avoid the gunfire.

I gritted my teeth, wanting to run out there and shoot them all dead, but knowing that I’d be a dead man in an instant.

I was of no use to Vee like that.

Returning fire could put her in the crosshairs.

“What do you want us to do?” Hank asked calmly, taking up a position near me.
