Enzo didn’t move, remaining behind us as Kieran got to work like a delighted child, reveling in Callum’s gurgled cries as he fought his restraints.

I watched on as Kieran gouged the hole in Callum’s jaw before masterfully yanking his tongue through the base.

The mutilation was definitely more than we usually did, but Kieran was always looking for ways to change it up, to expand his ‘art’.

I turned to find Enzo watching on, his brows pinched together, the only sign that he was somewhat unsettled by this act.

Those dark eyes of his met mine, the emotions swirling in their depths. I nodded at him, moving forward and picking up my own blade as Kieran stepped back, admiring his masterpiece.

Callum was gurgling, blood dripping from his broken lips and the gnarly wound under his jaw.

Whether or not it was exactly what the method was, Kieran was impressed with it, so I wasn’t going to dwell on whether he’d nailed the act or not.

“This is for Vee, she’d want to set you free from this,” I stated, my voice cold and unwavering as I bent over, resting my empty hand on his head.

He looked at me with a broken expression, his one slightly open eye begging for me to end this torture and despair. To set him free despite how he’d caged our glimmer of light, nearly snuffing her out.

For Vee.

I plunged my blade through his eye, the eyeball deflating from the pressure as I drove it in right to the hilt, the eyeball fluids dribbling down his cheek, blood mixing with it from his brain.

No sound left him, save for his final exhale, his chest falling still as I pulled back and his head fell forward.

“That was anticlimactic,” Kieran said with a heavy sigh.

“It’s done,” I stated as I turned to Enzo. He nodded at me, emotions warring behind his eyes, although he did his best to keep his face masked.

“She’s free of him,” Enzo muttered as he jutted his chin out.

“Free from him in some ways, but she’ll carry her scars.” Kieran’s smile had fallen, his face hardened as he stared at Callum with disdain and hatred.

He was right. We’d killed the one who’d brought her so much suffering, but there was no erasing the scars and fingerprints he’d left, the way he’d changed her to her core.

That was not something we had any hope of fixing, but I’d do my best to ease those scars, to kiss them over and make them almost invisible.

She’d never endure the heartache and pain again, the terror and uncertainty he’d brought upon her a distant memory while we were with her. I’d make sure of that.

I’d promised her so.

“We need to figure out what our next move is. We can’t let her see us covered in blood,” I said firmly, not wanting our precious flower tainted by what we’d done. She’d know what went down here, but we didn’t need her seeing his blood.

She didn’t need to know it all. I’d sure as hell not share Kieran’s sick, twisted toying with him. We all had ways of dealing with the darkness we’d been raised in, and I wouldn’t judge my adopted brother for that, but it did make me uneasy at times.

“We’ll clean ourselves up in the guards’ quarters. We won’t get any of his blood near her,” Zane agreed as he wiped his blade on a rag by the bench.

“I can dispose of the body, cut him up and bury him or something. I’ll get a guard to help,” Kieran offered, unfazed in the slightest as he lifted Callum’s head to get a peek at his mangled eyeball.

He’d always been willing to clean up his own messes, as had Zane. I glanced at Zane, noting how he was looking back towards the stairs Hank had taken Vee up, his jaw clenched.

Could he feel what I felt?

Something unsettling, like things had shifted with Vee, the air around us now charged, a darker energy crawling over our skin.

He turned back to me, those icy eyes harboring a shadow that made my heart skip a beat, understanding his unease.
