“I don’t know. I guess I’ll keep driving. I could head for Weststone, but there will be roadblocks. The Slades put them into effect as soon as you were taken. We could hope we come across one of them and that they’d not shoot me on sight,” he said as he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel.

I stared at him, at the way his eyes were flicking.

He looked so young now, reminding me that he was still a teenager.

“How old are you?” I asked.

“Eighteen.”

“Still a kid.”

“A kid doesn’t already have blood on his hands,” Thomas said with a sharp scoff. “I’m legal age in some places.”

“Yeah, but you’re handling all of this pretty well,” I murmured.

“I’m not the one who got hurt… who wasn’t already a part of this world,” he said softly.

“I’m alive, that’s all that matters. You got me away from there.”

“I hope it was the right choice. I won’t lie, I know I did the right thing saving you, but now I have to worry about my mom and sister, and what they’ll do to me if they find me,” he said, his jaw clenching as he flexed his hand on the wheel. “It concerns me.”

“You mean it scares you,” I whispered.

“Being scared doesn’t do well in this life,” he said, forcing a small smile.

I stared at him, at the mask he was pulling on, not wanting to show how afraid and unsure he was. We were no different there.

Nor was he the only one with blood on his hands.

“Did you kill someone?” I asked.

“We have to be initiated into the family somehow. Amazingly, I’ve not killed since, guess I’m lucky there,” he stated. “And it’s not like it was up close and personal. It was a hit, I shot them through a window.”

“Did you know them?”

“No. Someone who’d done the family wrong. I just had to do my job.”

He frowned as he stared at the wheel like it could magically absolve him of his sins.

I flinched as his phone sounded off, and he checked the screen before answering.

“Hello.”

I stared at him, my heart fluttering with hope. Was the associate of his calling back? I’d had it rolling around in my mind of how the brothers would react when they knew I was safe, and the thought of seeing them made me want to cry.

I felt disgusting and dirty, tainted by Vincent, but I forced myself to focus on the fact I was alive.

“Proof of life, got it. Veronica, can you say something?” Thomas said after a few moments of listening to whoever was on the other end. He handed me the phone, and I couldn’t ease the trembling in my hand as I held it to my ear.

“Hello?”

“Fuck, Vee, it’s good to hear your voice. Are you okay?” Zane’s voice was a welcome relief, and I let out a strangled sob, the smile breaking across my face as the tears blurred my vision.

“I’m alive, Thomas saved me, he got me out. He’s helping,” I said as I sniffled.

“Everything’s going to be okay. Are you sure you can trust him? He’s not going to double-cross us?”

“No, he had to hurt one of his men to help me. We can trust him, I promised him you’d help him and his family if he helped me.”
