“As good as can be. She’s tired, figured I’d let her sleep. Besides, Zane wants me to meet him with Thomas soon. Need to get this new identity going,” he said. “You going to be okay here with her?”

“Of course,” I said a little too quickly.

Enzo slid his gaze to mine as he sighed. “She doesn’t need to be scared. I know we all want blood for what she’s been through, but she needs support right now. She got attacked, and I know that can take its toll. She’s been through hell, more than anyone needs in one lifetime.”

“I know. Any news from dad or Moretti?”

“Nothing yet. But we’ll find out where they are soon enough, and then we’ll deal with them,” he said, turning to me with a wickedness in those eyes that I knew all too well. “They will pay in the worst possible way, especially Vincent.”

“I have some ideas for him, if you both allow me the honor,” I said quickly.

“What are you thinking?”

“Remember thatVikingsshow? I think we should see how difficult it is to recreate a blood eagle.”

Enzo nodded thoughtfully at this. “Sounds like a good idea.”

I smirked at his agreement, but then he looked back up the hallway uneasily.

“She needs us right now. At least, I think she does. Thomas mentioned she thought she deserved it all for calling for Callum’s death, so she’s clearly struggling with that. She’s lost right now,” he said.

Lost, broken. Those were things I knew a little about.

“I’ll take care of her,” I promised as I patted him on the back.

“I don’t doubt that at all. We’ll be back by nightfall, hopefully we’ll have more news by then.”

With that, he headed out, leaving me to gaze out over the city I’d been willing to burn down for the precious woman I’d fallen for.

Yes, there was no denying that now. She’d claimed a part of me, and I was going to have to accept that.

I smirked as I cocked my head, watching all the people move around far down below like insects. Life was such a beautiful thing, but so was death. And I looked forward to showing those who’d taken her the beauty of it, and the horror.

For now, though, I’d see if my little princess was hungry.

“Vee?” I knocked on the bedroom door, causing it to swing open wider.

I watched her whole body stiffen as I stepped into the room, causing a pang of guilt to twist through me.

“Kieran,” she breathed as she sat up hesitantly.

“I thought you might be hungry.” I carried the tray over with the fresh omelet and juice, and a small smile touched her lips. “Sorry it’s not something more.”

“You didn’t have to cook for me.”

“We both know I don’t have to, but I wanted to. Besides, I have a lot of making up to do for scaring you earlier. I shouldn’t have let my emotions get the better of me, but Vee… we promised to keep you safe, and we failed. I failed, and I can’t fix that,” I ground out as I sat on the bed, the darkness swirling within me.

“There was nothing you could have done, I shouldn’t have gone outside, I shouldn’t—”

“You did nothing wrong, love. Don’t you dare think this was somehow your fault. Nor was it karma for whatwedid toCallum. We wanted you to know that we valued your thoughts, that you held power with us. If we’d known you’d take on the guilt…”

“Would you have killed him if I’d asked you not to?” she whispered, her hands curled in the blanket.

I clenched my jaw as I met those emerald eyes that had hooked my soul. I knew my lack of answer was enough as she sighed and closed her eyes.

“Hank said it was likely. I wasn’t sure.”

“He hurt you, Vee. As much as we would have wanted to do as you said, it would’ve been hard. He would’ve hurt more women, you weren’t the first. The best thing you can do for a rabid dog like that is to put it down,” I stated.
