And yet, when he’d said I looked sexy with his hand necklace, that had made something deep inside me switch. I couldn’t deny I had enjoyed it. How a part of me had known he wouldn’t hurt me. Not after what he’d gone through to get me back.

I rolled onto my back, finding the other side of the bed empty and a small sadness crept into me.

“Relax, princess, he’s just seeing our father in regards to some Moretti business. Seems something has come up. I madeyou an omelet if you’re hungry,” Kieran stated as he nodded at the bedside table. I turned my head to see the plate with a steaming mug of coffee beside it.

“Thanks.”

“I got you something, too,” he added as he leaned back, fishing something out of his breast pocket.

I sat up, keeping the sheet wrapped around my chest for modesty.

He pulled out a chain, and my eyes widened at the glittering necklace.

“It’s sort of like a locket, see?” he said as he opened it. It was now that I realized the heart-shaped glittering piece was two wings set with small, glittering stones in the feathers as they wrapped carefully around a center stone, and they opened upwards like they were spreading wide for flight. A small silver key hung from the bottom of it, and I just watched as he revealed the inside to me. Inside was another silver heart set with the one dazzling stone visible from the outside, and the words‘you set yourself free’engraved into the heart around the jewel.

“I had it made for you from white gold and diamonds, and had them use your old engagement ring as well. To symbolize how you set yourself free and spread your wings, and you hold the key to our hearts,” he said as he held it out to me.

I stared at it in shock as I accepted it, my heart melting at the thoughtfulness of the delicate piece. I’d never seen anything like it, and it was so beautifully crafted.

“It’s beautiful,” I breathed, my eyes blurring as the raw emotions washed over me.

“You’re not stuck in any cages any more, Vee. You hold the key to your life as well as our hearts, and I’ll go to the ends of the world with you. I will say this now, though, Zane asked me to have a small tracking chip put in it. That way nothing like this ever happens again,” he said as he cupped my face. “It’swaterproof even with the chip, so you can wear it at all times if you wish.”

I felt the hot tear slide down my cheek, and he smiled as he brushed it away with his thumb.

“I love it,” I said, my voice breaking at the touching gift.

“Good, how about we see how it looks on?” he suggested, and I nodded as I turned away from him.

His hand grazed my neck as he helped me put it on, and I quivered instantly. His delicate touch sent a thrill down my spine, and he followed it with a soft kiss on my shoulder.

Maybe someone else would be uneasy about the tracking chip inside it, but after my kidnapping, it was a welcome peace of mind.

I turned back to him, my chest tightening at the sweet smile on his face. Even his eyes had a deep tenderness to them as he took me in, his gaze skimming over the necklace.

“You look as beautiful as ever. It suits you,” he stated.

“Thank you.”

“You’re a beautiful, powerful woman, Vee. Stronger than you know. You’ve overcome a lot in this life already, and you need to remember that. You have a true beauty rarely found,” he said as he stroked my cheek, his thumb grazing over my lower lip. “The things we’ve done for you, and would do for you, you have no idea of the power you hold,” he whispered.

I trembled as his lips met mine in a fervent kiss, his hand still cupping my cheek. My sheet slid down, and he broke away, drawing in a sharp breath.

“I best let you eat breakfast in peace,” he groaned, his eyes dipping down for just a second before they locked back into mine. He dove in for one last, agonizingly soft kiss before he rose off the bed and turned away. “Don’t want to make you any more sore than you already are, princess. We have plenty of time for that.”

He strode out without another word, and I just smiled after him, touching my new necklace.

It was a new promise, fashioned from a broken proposal. One that made me more giddy than I wanted to admit.

I stood under the warm spray of the water, my whole body finding relief. I’d looked in the mirror at my necklace, my jaw dropping at the marks littering my throat and collarbone. Zane had certainly left his mark, but the sight of it made me smirk.

He’d laid his claim on me with both marks and words, and it excited me. The strange feeling of power and control it all gave me, knowing I had such a pull over them, it was bizarrely invigorating.

“You’re a twisted woman,” I muttered to myself as I let the water run through my hair.

I stiffened as I heard the bathroom door open. I’d not bothered to lock it, it wasn’t like there was anyone in the penthouse who hadn’t already seen me naked.

“Do you mind if I join you, amore mio?”
