"That's very kind of you, but I'll be fine to get up there on my own."

I start calculating the distance and how long it will take me to drive it.

"All right, then. Well, it was nice to meet you." Dunlop goes to leave then suddenly turns around. "Just in case you don't already know, even though I suspect you do, Wilby's a great guy. I know he can be the most painfullest of painful pains, but stick it out. He's worth it."

"Yeah?"

He nods, smiling. "Yeah."

I take a breath and a step closer to him. "Very personal question coming up."

He smirks. "I think I know what you're going to say, but go on."

"How come you two never…?"

"Became a thing?"

I nod.

He chuckles. "We're too similar. Imagine Wilby's energy level, then double it, and you get me. Together, we're chaotic. Besides, I was waiting for my American, just like Wilby's waiting for his."

My neck warms. "You really think so?"

"I know so. In all the years we've been friends, I've never seen that pathetic sappy look on his face. Not ever. He's got real feelings for you."

He leans in and presses his pointer finger into my chest. "And as his friend, it would be remiss of me not to point out that if you hurt him, I know people who can end you."

And then he shuffles his shoulders and smiles. "Are we clear?"

"Yeah," I say slowly. "We're clear."

Petrified, but clear.

"Good. Now get your arse up to Airlie Beach and find your man."

Col:How's the Gold Coast?

I’m surprised when I see three bouncy dots appear on my screen. Hmm. Looks like I might be getting a timely response for once.

Wilby:Oh my god. Beautiful. Amazing. The beaches here are superb. Even better than Sydney.

Wilby:Wanna hear a story about the last time I went to the beach?

Wilby:Spoiler #1: It involves a cranky New Yorker and a novel way of adding some more froth to the ocean.

Wilby:Spoiler #2: It does not contain the word sprog.

This cranky New Yorker chuckles to himself. Wilby thinks he's beingsoooclever. He has no idea I know where he is.

And he sure as hell doesn't know I've just touched down in Airlie Beach.

But, fine, I'll play along.

Col:Up for some fun?

Wilby:Always

Col:I have a surprise for you.
