"When I visited Dunlop, it wasn't to beg for money. I asked him to put some brilliant property minds to work and look over things. Subdivision is usually something that happens in cities, but, like you said, with all the fucking titles the farm has, it could be done here."

"I agree. Saving the house, possibly all the houses on the land including yours, your sisters', and Polly's, is possible. The most important takeaway in that scenario is that you'll have roofs over your heads."

He shakes his head. "That's not the most important thing."

"What is, then?"

He looks at me and says, "That we'll be all together. My family will stay intact. I can lose things, but I can't lose them."

His eyes are shining. He's on the verge of tears.

I blink and realize something… So am I.

I swallow around the lump in my throat. "You really love them, don't you?"

"The most important thing in the world is family."

It's not the first time I've heard him say that, but it never fails to affect me.

"Doesn't matter if we're full blood or not, nothing comes between us. I'd do anything for them."

"I know you would, Wilby. You're a great guy."

"Yeah… I am."

I smile and elbow him gently in the side. He elbows me back just as softly.

He blows out a deep breath. "When's the meeting?"

"Next week, in Sydney. Why?"

Another deep breath. "Gus will be in Sydney then."

It takes me a moment to place who Gus is. "The guy who might be your father?"

"Yeah. We spoke a few days ago. He and his partner, Tate, are flying down to Australia. They have something they want to talk to me about."

"Any idea what that might be?"

"Something to do with my paternity, I guess. I could have my world blown up yet again."

I link my fingers more firmly with his. "I'm sorry you're going through so much all at once."

"Thank you." Our eyes meet. "Can we make a truce and stick to it this time, please?"

"I would love that. I'm here for you, Wilby."

"And I'm here for you, too." He smiles, brushing his fingers against mine. "Um…"

"What? Say it. You scare me when you think before you speak."

He chuckles. "Talking about my sister and my mum before made me think of yours. Have you…scattered her ashes yet?"

"No. I haven't found the right time. He says for the millionth time in the past nineteen years."

"Hey. Don't beat yourself up about it. Letting go is hard."

"You seem to be doing pretty well about your mom."
