"Fuck. Good thing the old chook kept her license up to date."

"Yeah. It is."

"Wait. How didyouget here?"

To get from the house to Scuttlebutt to the airport by car would've taken him a few hours… Not to mention that there wouldn't have been any flights until this morning.

Col takes a long breath, shakes his head as if in disbelief, and then suddenly looks like he wants to murder me.

My mouth falls open. "You didn't?"

"The most terrifying two hours of my life," he says, shuddering.

"You got in a light plane for me?"

He nods soberly. "I did. There was no other choice."

He's wrong. There was a choice, but he chose…me.

"I'm so sorry you had to go through that."

He looks like he's trying to be angry, but I can see the smile teasing the corners of his mouth. "One time andneveragain," he says, pointing a finger at me.

My heart explodes in my chest… In a good way. Not in anI need medical helpway.

"Never again," I repeat.

I feel horrible that he had to confront his biggest fear in an emergency, but he did it. He actually did it. And the last vestiges of doubt that I had just got fucking vanquished.

I grin up at him even though it's probably not the smartest thing I could do if I want to get out of this hospital in one piece.

"You got in a light plane for me." Even repeating the words doesn't lessen the enormity of them. "I can't believe it."

He gazes down at me. "In that case, I am more than happy to spend the rest of my life reminding you."

"That's music to my ears…Cap."

"Cap?"

"Yeah. It's better thanbaby, isn't it?"

He thinks it over for a moment, then a big smile splits his face. "Yeah. Yeah, it is."

"I don't know what I did to deserve you."

Col takes my hand and gently threads his fingers with mine. "I think we both got pretty lucky."

"Nuh-uh. I'm luckier than you, and you can't beat me."

He shakes his head, his eyes glimmering. "Are you fighting me on this?"

I close my eyes and let the love I feel for him, from him, simmer through my body. "No. I'm done fighting. I'm all yours."

A tear slides down his cheek. "In that case, I'll need a receipt in case I change my mind after thirty days."

I let out a laugh but stop abruptly due to the stabbing pain shooting through my lower back.

"Be careful," Col says, gently sliding his hand up and down my arm. "You're not out of the woods yet."
