“I’m going to head outside, to investigate something at the river. Some sunshine might do you two well. Would you like to accompany me?”

Triston nodded. “I’d like to get some sunlight.”

As a feline shifter, that made sense. They liked to nap in the sun.

I turned to Percival, who nodded. “I will come as well.”

“Great!” I said and clapped my hands together. “I’ll add some additional provisions to my bag, and then we can go.”

While they got their shoes on, I put two more water bottles, some additional protein bars, and more beef jerky into my bag.

Both waited by the front door, looking at each other curiously, but not speaking.

“Ready?” I asked, even though it was obvious.

They nodded and Percival pulled open the door for me.

“Thank you,” I said and gave him a smile as I walked by.

He rewarded me with a soft smile of his own.

Chapter

Six

Heading out, I lead the way down one of the paths I’d made that went straight to the river.

Percival and Triston walked silently behind me, the tension between them palpable, but at least they weren’t fighting.

“It’s about thirty more minutes,” I advised without turning around. “Though, I’m not sure if the thing I’m looking for is right at the riverbank here or if I might need to travel farther upstream.”

“What are you searching for?” Percival asked. “The others went after a creature, what are you after?”

“There have been strange things going on in my woods lately, the creature is one of them, but Natalia, a crow who frequents my house, brought me back some suspicious rocks. She said they’re from the river, so I’ve come to see if there are more.”

“You can understand the crow?” Triston asked.

“I can telepathically communicate with animals and shifters in their animal form.” I really wished I could do it while they were in human form, too, but for whatever reason my power only let me communicate to animals.

“Interesting,” Triston whispered.

“So, we’re looking for odd rocks?” Percival asked.

“Yes.”

“How will we know what to look for?” Triston asked.

“They’re clear and have magical power in them,” I explained.

“What?” they both asked simultaneously.

I laughed, stopped, and turned around to face them, reaching into my pocket to pull out one of the rocks. “Can you understand why I’m looking into it now?”

Percival touched the rock and jerked his hand back like he’d been shocked.

Triston scowled, stepped closer, and picked the rock up, rolling it around in his hand. He raised it and sniffed. “It’s an odd smelling magic.”

My brows rose. “You can tell the different magics by smell?”
