“I had to save her. I felt it in my gut. If I had the power to save her, why wouldn’t I?”

He didn’t respond for so long I thought he wouldn’t.“I’m glad you are safe and I’m glad it all worked out.”

“I still don’t know about the rocks,” I reminded him, “but that’s my problem, not any of yours.”

He blinked.

“Did you get ahold of your family or friends?” I asked. “Do you need me to take you to the train station tomorrow?”

“Branson offered to drop me off.”

“Ah,” I replied and laid back to look at the stars more, smiling sadly. “I see.”

“If you want them to stay, you should tell them.”

“My life is to treat the injured, not to hold them hostage.” I smiled at him. “When my patients are ready to leave, they may leave. My life will go on just like theirs must.”

“Sounds lonely.”

I shrugged. “Sometimes, but then I have eventful days like today. Thank you for protecting me.”

“I didn’t really protect you. Just slowed it down for a second.”

“A second which allowed us to make it into the wards,” I reminded him.

“Which you stepped out of.”

I laughed and said, “Well, everything worked out, so best not to dwell on the negative.”

He huffed a laugh and lay his head atop his paws.

It wasn’t until he laid me on my bed that I realized I had fallen asleep on the roof and he’d carried me to my room. “Thank you, Triston.”

“You’re welcome, Ember. Sleep well.”

I pulled my blanket up and rolled over, preparing to do just that.

“Help!”a female voice screamed in my head.

Bolting upright in bed, I looked around, but my room was dark. “Who?” I called out as loud as I could.

“Help!”

Running out of my room, I bumped into Riddick who helped steady me. “Whoa, what’s going on?”

“Where are you?” I shouted and ran towards the front door, throwing it open and running outside.

“What’s going on?” Kieran asked as he and Percival followed me.

“Help!”

The voice was towards the city.

Grabbing a flashlight from the porch, glad I kept them there for emergencies, I turned it on and ran towards the voice. “I’m coming!” I shouted. “Talk again! Where are you?”

“Tied up! Help! Hard. To. Breathe!”

Kieran ran beside me, eyes scanning for threats.
