“What kind of creature? How far away?” I asked Percival, projecting my thoughts loud enough he could hear me from how far away we were.

“Deer. Coated in black. Weird ooze on its body and leaking from its mouth.”

That sounded awful. Was it cursed like Beatrice had been? Could I save it with my blood?

The creature ran out from the tree line, coming into the light and ran along the riverbank behind us.

“Do you think it’s another shifter like Beatrice?” I asked.

“Please tell me you are not thinking about giving that thing your blood,” Triston said, growling softly.

“If it’s cursed and my blood will heal it, why wouldn’t I?” It was like he didn’t know me still. You would think he would have learned quickly about my goals and what I was willing to do for others.

“That’s a very bad idea. Feeding your blood to a bunch of animals or shifters isn’t advisable. Plus, who is cursing them with the only cure being your blood? Clearly someone has a vendetta against you.”

“I’m sure there’s more than one person,” I muttered and looked over his shoulder at the deer. “What if I just give it a little?—”

“We’re going to run into your wards and discuss our next steps and options there,” he interrupted.

While I wanted to argue, he was right that feeding things my blood wasn’t something I should do regularly. As he finished the run to the house, I thought over all of the people who hated me enough to curse another person or creature to force it to try to kill me, but couldn’t really pinpoint someone. Lots of peopledisliked me, but I wasn’t sure anyone hated me so much to want to actively send people to kill me.

Triston set me on my feet once inside the wards, but kept a hand in front of me, keeping me back from the line.

He knew I could just move him, but I stayed behind him like he wanted.

The deer slammed into the ward and let out a high-pitched shriek.“Blood!”it yelled.

“It’s after my blood,” I said. “It’s cursed like Beatrice was.”

“This is very concerning,” Percival said as he shifted and landed on his feet beside me. “I know you want to cure it, but feeding things your blood isn’t advisable.”

“That’s what I said,” Triston muttered.

“It’s in pain,” I argued and took a step forward, but Triston pressed his arm against my chest.

“Ember,” he growled.

The deer stepped back from the ward and shook his head, his large antlers almost touching the tree branches above him.“He’s coming.”

“Who is he?” I asked.

Triston, Percival, and Riddick turned to look at me with concerned expressions.

“The one who curses. He’s coming.”

Well, that wasn’t ominous.

“When? When is he coming?”

“Soon.”The deer turned and ran off into the woods, disappearing from our view.

“What did he say?” Riddick asked.

“He said the one who curses is coming.” And when he did, I would destroy him for hurting innocent creatures and people.
