Triston and Percival walked on either side of me, both in warrior forms, snarling and growling in anger just as palpable as mine.

We would destroy them together.

“Together,”they both growled mentally.

“That’s it!” Caleb shouted with a soft laugh. “I don’t know why we didn’t see it sooner.”

I stopped and turned to look at him, the laugh somehow breaking through the anger I felt, but not dissipating it completely. “What?”

He walked up to me and reached both hands out, like he was going to take mine, but Triston and Percival stepped forward, blocking him with loud growls.

“Mine,” Triston growled. “No touch.”

Mine? What?

“I think we all just need to take a deep breath,” Caleb said, closed his eyes, and drew in a loud, deep breath through his mouth.

It felt like he sucked up all my anger, the rage disappearing immediately and causing me to sag forward.

Percival turned and caught me before I fell, his body reverted to full man form. “Ember?”

“She’s okay, just relaxed,” Caleb said with a smug smile.

“You affected our mood?” I asked. “How?”

“Well, you did it first,” he said. “Why do you think your males here got so angry?”

My brows furrowed and I shook my head. “I don’t understand.”

He smirked. “Which part? About them being your males or about you influencing their emotions?”

Neither …

“You are part siren, Ember. You can influence people’s emotions.”

Horror filled me. “What? No.”

Chapter

Fifteen

Caleb’s smile softened and he said, “Don’t worry, you can’t make people fall in love with you or anything like that, but you can cause their emotions to change. Haven’t you noticed before how you could have multiple alphas in your house without them fighting or how the patients you treat likely don’t ever try to attack you? It’s because people are drawn to you. That’s probably why that mage ass hat Mr. Mayongan doesn’t like you. He can tell that you’re not just a mage and feels the pull to you when you’re around.”

This was too much.

“What did you mean about not thinking about it sooner?” I said, bringing us back to the previous conversation.

“Oh, right. I think this might be the work of the organization we’ve been fighting with,” Caleb said and looked at Riddick. “What do you think would happen if a group of hybrid shifters destroyed a mage council?”

“Why attack me in the city then?” Riddick asked.

“To anger her and draw her out for the public to see. They saw how powerful she is, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to believe she attacked the Council and murdered innocent people.”

“You think that organization was the one who sent Riddick, Triston, and Percival to my house? To try to get us all in one place?”

He nodded. “It’s only a theory, but yes, I think that’s what is going on.”

“You think the Council is part of it?” I asked, looking up towards the mountain. “And that’s why they denied our request to investigate?”
