“Em?” Triston asked and grabbed my arm.

My body turned and using my magic, flung him away from me and into the river.

Luckily, the water wasn’t deep here, so he was able to stand and climb out.

“She’s under some type of mind control,” Kieran croaked. “That’s how I got here, I think. I don’t remember everything, there are … blank spots. Dark spots.”

“Where is she going? Where are they forcing her to go?” Percival asked.

Their voices followed me as I headed past the smoldering wreckage that had once been my house and towards my truck.

“Who are you and what do you want with me?”I demanded.

“Shut up and watch. Everything will become clear soon,”the voice said, piloting me to drive into the city.

“Ember, you’ve got to try to fight this,” Triston begged. “You’re being controlled and if you can put up a mental barrier, you can stop this. You’re powerful, you can stop them.”

“You may be strong, but you aren’t strong enough.”The voice laughed, definitely male, and I tried to use the connection, to follow it back to them. If I could learn about them, find out who they were, maybe I could tell the guys … somehow.

“What do you think they’re planning?” Triston asked Percival.

“I don’t know, but it can’t be anything good. Look where we are,” Percival answered as I climbed out of the truck.

We were back at the City Park, where we’d fought the creatures. Where I could now see a big, black spot in the center of the grassy area, right next to where I’d had the stone box. Was that the black ooze that had come off the cursed creatures I had cured?

“You have very perceptive. Yes, it is the ooze. Funny how you didn’t pay attention to it until now. Funny and damning for you.”

“I will end you before all of this is over,”I threatened.

“Darling, you’ll be dead before the day is over.” Moremaniacal male laughter.

Did he think he was a movie villain? What an awful, stupid laugh.

There was no way I would let myself get killed by someone like this. No flippin’ way.

“What’s a camera crew doing here already?” Triston asked.

He and Percival walked at my side, following as I approached the black ooze.

“What is that?” Percival asked when he finally noticed the ooze.

“It smells foul,” Triston said and gagged.

“What’s been going on since we left?” Kieran asked.

“None of your business,” Triston growled. “Why are you following us? Don’t you have somewhere else to go?”

“I didn’t come here willingly, man. Cut me some slack. I would never harm Ember.”

“Bullshit. You hurt her when you left and you know it.”

Had I been in control of my body, I would have flinched. And honestly, was this the time for this discussion?

“You don’t know anything about us or what occurred between us,” Kieran snapped.

“I don’t need to, to see the obvious,” Triston said.

“Guys! Now is not the time for that. She’s about to touch that nasty looking goo and I don’t think that’s going to end well for her,” Percival said and tried to grab me to stop me.
