With a sigh, I stood off his lap, closed my eyes, and reached down for my magic. There was a spark, not as strong as normal, but there was a spark. Opening my eyes, I held my hand out towards my empty hot chocolate mug. Shifting my feet slightly apart, grounding myself, I took a breath and tried to use my telekinesis to pull it towards me.

Chapter

Twenty-Three

The cup flew towards me and I gasped, nearly missing grabbing it in my shock that it moved. The next second, a vine shot up out of the ground and grasped the cup inches from me.

Caleb had moved forward, hand outstretched, as if he was going to stop the cup himself.

“Is-Is that your vine?” Caleb asked Prince Foxfire and looked at Nico as well.

Both shook their heads.

“It’s …” I took a deep breath. “…It’s mine.”

All eyes turned to me.

“Yours?” Nico asked.

“Well, I was told I’m an elf, er part elf, and, um, I thought maybe instead of dirt or stone I could use a vine … and so I did.” Really, it had just been a self-preservation technique, even though getting smacked by a cup wouldn’t have killed me.

“How does your magic feel?” Jolie asked, on her feet now as she moved towards me.

“There’s still a slight block,” I said. “It was sluggish to use what I did.”

“That’s good!” Prince Foxfire exclaimed. “Sluggish and able to use is better than blocked completely.” He raised his hand, waiting for me to slap his palm in a high five.

He wasn’t wrong and his positivity seeped into me. I stepped forward and slapped his hand, smiling wide.

After, I stumbled forward and would have fallen, but several hands reached out to grab me.

“Okay, let’s take her back to Kara, so we can get a potion and then let her rest before Leona subjects her to torture,” Prince Rhys ordered.

I looked at Jolie, who smiled.

“She’s not going to torture you. Rhys is just a baby.”

“Come on,” Caleb said and stepped forward, putting his hand on my lower back.

I turned and my eyes widened when I saw Triston and Branston there as well. They followed behind us as we went into the house and to Queen Kara, who sat at the dining table drinking tea with her husband and King Daniel.

I started to bow to them, but Caleb growled, so I stilled.

“Is something wrong?” Queen Kara asked.

“She used some magic, but it’s not the full amount and she almost fainted,” Caleb informed her.

She stood, walked to me, then turned to her husband and crooked her finger. “Come help.”

He walked over and smiled at me. “It is lovely to meet you, Ember. I’m Katar.”

I dipped my head. “It’s an honor to meet you, King Katar.”

He tsked. “You do not need to be formal. Please, just call us by our names.”

That was very awkward, but I supposed if I was dating his grandson, it did make sense.

Kara and Katar held out their hands, magic glowing around them. After several tense moments, they stopped, looked at each other, and left the room, heads close together as they spoke.
