“You too.”

I force myself to smile at her as we gather our things and head out.

“I’ll drive. You can drink.”

She winks at me, and this time, the smile feels more genuine. The drive over to Nosh is short since it’s just a block away. We park in the parking lot and climb out.

I follow her into the diner and we take a seat at a booth in the back. Neither of us grabs a menu since we always get the same thing. We’ve been coming to the diner since we were teens.

Ruby comes over to take our orders and I smile at her.

“How’s it going?” She asks us.

“Pretty good. What about you?”

“Can’t complain,” she says with a smile, rubbing her pregnant stomach. “What can I get for you guys? Cheeseburgers and fries?”

“Yep,” Kerry and I say at the same time, and Ruby grins.

“Coming right up.”

She heads back behind the counter, and I turn to Kerry.

“How was the coffee shop?”

“Busy. We’re on track to have our best quarter yet.”

“That’s great!”

“How are you feeling?” She asks gently, and I shrug.

“Numb, I guess. Heartbroken, but maybe this is for the best, you know? Like, at least now I know where I stand with him. It’s time for me to move on from Beau and try to find someone else.”

“Then that’s what we’ll do.”

Ruby comes over with our burgers, and we dig in. Kerry keeps my spirits up by talking about all of the town gossip that she heard today. I smile and laugh along, and by the time we’re done eating, I’m feeling a lot better. It still hurts, but it doesn’t feel like I’m going to die. At least not at this moment.

“Ready to go let loose?” Kerry asks me as we pay and leave.

“Yeah, let’s do this.”

She lets out a whoop as we get back in her car and make the drive over to Murphy’s Bar. The place is packed, which isn’t surprising since it’s Friday night. We find a parking spot and both climb out. I’m sweating by the time we make it inside and up to the bar to order a drink.

“This place is packed!” I shout over the music to Kerry.

She nods, looking around at all of the people.

“See anyone that you like?” She asks me, and I scan the place.

There are a few cute tourists, but none of them make my heart race the way that Beau does. Or did.

“Not yet,” I tell her, and she nods.

The bartender comes our way and we both order a cosmopolitan. I buy the first round, and Kerry and I both take a healthy gulp as they’re set in front of us.

“Want to do a shot?” She asks me, and I snort.

“Are we getting that drunk tonight?” I ask her, and she shrugs.
