He pulls back from me as I stiffen, his eyes dark and stormy even as his mouth twitches into a grin. “Iris Siccario,” he murmurs. “You’re even more lovely than your photograph.”

“Are you—” and for one impossible moment I wonder if this is the man my great uncle has promised me to, an American billionaire from the deep south—

No. There’s no possible way. The man staring at me is irrepressibly Greek, from his burnished skin and golden eyes, to his dark, thick hair and laughing grin.

“Kristo Kostas,” he confirms, his gaze still pinned on me. “At your service. You’ve made your great uncle very worried.”

“Ah! You are married, yes?”

I blink down to see that the woman is tugging at my sleeve now. I recognize the transcendent joy in her face, undoubtedly the same joy I glowed with a few moments ago when I first saw her and her husband…and I hesitate. I don’t have the heart to lie to her—or to tell her to the truth.

Fortunately, I don’t have to.

Kristo pulls me to him, tucking me against his body as he turns to the old woman. “She is the only woman I will ever love, I swear it,” he declares, so earnestly she claps her hands, her smile positively euphoric.

“Good, good.” It’s the old man who speaks now in a thick Greek accent, as he gently draws his wife back onto the path to continue their walk. “You will never regret loving with all your heart, eh? Never.”

We watch them as they toddle along the path until they are several yards away, and I sigh with deep, abiding contentment…right up until Kristo’s hand loosens on my arm.

“Now, beautiful, you’re coming with me,” he says.

And I bolt.
