“Jo—”

“I’m sorry, Quinn.” She turns and my heart nearly breaks as I take in her beautiful, tear-stained face. “I’m sorry I let you down.”

I cross to her in a few short steps, taking the glass from her trembling hands and setting it to the side before gathering her hands in mine. “Jo Prescott, you wouldn’t know how to let anyone down, especially not me. From the first moment I saw you, dressed as Lolita, I knew I couldn’t live without you—before I knew you were the head of your own family. Every day since you’ve only proven your value to me.”

“But I failed—”

“You didn’t fail. Geno failed you and your father failed you—he should have vetted Geno long before you inherited him.”

She sighs, and I know she accepts the truth of my words. Accepts it, but still blames herself for doing exactly what I have already accused her of—trusting the information she was given—the data, not her instincts. Though I can’t fault her for that. Geno was a trusted part of her family. No one should be forced to second guess family.

My pulse jacks as I consider what I want to do next. If Jo will only agree to the alternative alliance I’m about to propose, she’ll never have to second guess family again.
