Cameron preens at the secret smile she gives him.

They grab food from the breakfast buffet, Cameron checking first to make sure Braden isn’t there, then retake their seats.

‘So, what session are you—’ Cameron is interrupted by his phone ringing. Seeing it’s Chloe, he dismisses the call. ‘Sorry. What talks are you going to today?’

‘There’s a half-day series on subscription models that I want to check out,’ Jules says, putting salt and pepper on her scrambled eggs. ‘And Samantha texted me last night. She wants me to watch James McCarthy’s talk on UXD research methodology, which isn’t really my specialty, but she’s my boss, so.’ Jules shrugs and picks up her knife and fork. ‘What about you?’

He’s got it memorised, but he pulls the paper program from his pocket and moves his bowl of yoghurt and muesli to the side so he can unfold it flat on the table.

Jules covers her mouth with her wrist, but the laugh gets through.

‘What?’ Cameron asks.

‘Nothing. Nothing. It’s just …’ She scrunches up her nose. It’s both adorable and hot. ‘It’s kind of cute that you have a hard copy of the schedule that you’ve literally highlighted and annotated.’

‘Cute?’

Jules shrugs, still holding in laughter.

‘Just wait until you’ve only got five minutes between sessions and can’t remember where the next one is and your internet connection lags,’ he warns her.

‘Has that happened to you?’

‘Yes. Because technology hates me, remember? That’s why I have this.’ Cameron taps the program.

Jules finally laughs properly, making Cameron’s inner whirlwind pick up. ‘I’ll take my chances. Me and technology have a good rapport.’

He’s halfway through telling Jules his plans when his phone buzzes on the table. He flips it over to see Chloe’s face, again, and dismisses the call.

‘Do you need to get that?’ Jules nods at his phone.

‘Nah. She’ll probably end up texting anyway.’

Of course, as soon as he says that, the phone rings again.

‘I don’t think she’s going to text,’ Jules says.

‘Sorry.’ He accepts the call and half-turns away from Jules, who’s demolished half her plate already. ‘Chloe. It’s not a great time.’

‘Oh. Have the presentations started already?’

‘No. I’m with Jules having breakfast.’

Jules taps him on the shoulder. ‘Say hi from me.’

‘Jules says hi,’ he tells Chloe.

‘Hi Jules!’ Chloe screams through the phone.

Cameron winces. ‘Hear that?’ he checks with Jules.

‘Loud and clear,’ she laughs.

‘I’m actually super glad I caught you together!’ Chloe continues, back to normal volume. ‘You need to invite her to the symphony tonight.’

Cameron glances at Jules, who’s started scrolling through her phone, chewing on her bottom lip. ‘No, I don’t.’

‘Come on. You promised you’d give it a go with Jules, and you’ve been ignoring all the texts from me and Carrie, so we know you backed out.’
