“Argh, I’m so jealous! Okay, fine, go fall in love while I sit here with my cup of wine lamenting my lack of love life.”

“Goodnight, Paige!”

“Bye girl!”

With a warm cup of peppermint tea, I grab my phone to sit down and talk to this anonymous man who has caught my attention. He is kind and caring and makes me feel special, which I am desperately looking for. Who would have thought I would end up on a second-hand couch, sitting in a one-bedroom apartment, talking to some mysterious man on a mail-order bride app? Life sure takes lots of twists and turns. I should be a well-respected pack member from a sacred bloodline with psychic abilities. I should, in theory, be able to see future events—or at least that’s what my aunt told me when I was fifteen, but I have yet to have one vision about anything.

I see I have a new message when I open the app.

Wolfy182: How was your day?

Lilac351: It was busy; my daughter and I went to the park this morning and then spent the afternoon cleaning, so you know, domestic bliss. How was your day?

Wolfy182: It was busy but boring. I was excited to talk to you tonight. Waiting all day to sit down and read your messages brings joy to an otherwise dull day. Found some lilacs today while at a construction site; I had to get rid of the bush because it was in the way, a shame, really. But I have some sitting on my coffee table, which made me think of you.

How can a person I have never met make me blush so much? He is so sweet and considerate. I hadn't actually given any thought to what my handle was going to be. I just picked my favorite flower, and then the site told me it was already taken, so I added random numbers.

Lilac351: (Swoon) You sure know how to make a girl blush. I’m sure all the riveting stories of my boring life have you completely enthralled.

Wolfy182: You have been a breath of fresh air, if I am being honest. People around me are…always distant.

Lilac351: Why?

: If you don’t mind me asking

Wolfy182: I’m in a position of authority; maybe it has to do with that. I think I’m nice enough, but maybe that’s just me tooting my own horn. ;)

Lilac351: I see humility is something you have in abundance, lol.

Wolfy182: Well, I didn’t want to say it, but…yes, I am an extremely attractive and humble man.

Lilac351: Everything I ever dreamed of <3

Wolfy182: Who would have thought your dream man could be found on a mail-order app.

Lilac351: Definitely not how I thought my love story would go, but then again, life generally doesn’t; it’s better to take the good when it presents itself.

Wolfy182: I see your positivity shining through.

Lilac351: LOL

“Mommy, my belly hurts.” In an instant, my winding-down time turned into a clean-up time. Maddie starts to throw up everywhere, and my night consists of laundry and comforting my sick little girl. It’s past midnight when I get back into bed and tell Wolfy182 what happened. Sometimes, being a mom is truly exhausting.

???

Maddie is still not feeling well the following day, so I need to call into work. This isn’t great, as my manager is not my biggest fan, but I have no choice. Working as a cashier in a grocery store has its perks, but time off for a sick child is not one of them.

“Hello, this is Darla.”

“Hi Darla, this is Quinn calling. I’m really sorry to do this, but Maddie was sick and vomiting all night, so I can’t come in for my shift today.”

“Quinn, this is your fourth family emergency this month. You are a very unreliable employee.”

“I know, I’m sorry, but when she is sick, there isn’t much I can do about it. I have no sitter, and the daycare won’t take her if she is sick.”

“All I hear is excuses, which is not my problem. If the company isn’t your priority, then we will have to let you go.”

“What! No, I need this job.”
