“Yeah, but that’s part of the process, only going to get worse the closer to the due date. But I'm already wanting this baby out. I forgot how uncomfortable I get while pregnant.”

“I am still so annoyed that you didn't find out the gender. How am I supposed to shop for the baby? You should have had the technician write the gender down on a paper just for me. You know what, doesn't matter. I'll just buy one of everything.”

“I know, I know, but Eli wanted to be surprised. I feel like I owe him that much after the last time. Besides, we all know you can't keep a secret to save your life. You would have let it slip.” I laugh because it's true.

“Ugh, fine. So tell me, what’s up? Thorn is heading out this morning to head to your pack. Why did I find out the council is going to your pack through my brother and not my best friend?”

Putting the last swipe of eyeliner on, I give her my best 'really, you didn't tell me' look. But I can't stand here all day, so I grab a scrunchy and throw my hair up.

“That’s partly why I’m calling, actually. I was wondering if you would come down and help babysit Maddie while we have meetings with the Council. Darlene is going to watch her too, but we miss you, and it would be so nice to see you.”

“Of course, I will come! I have a lot of vacation time built up, so I can put in for it today. When do you need me to come down?”

“I was hoping you could come down tomorrow. Is that too soon? Darlene can help today, but she was hoping to go see a friend tomorrow. She says she can cancel, but she helps out so much, I kinda feel bad.”

If I go down tomorrow, then I won’t be able to meet my match on Friday. Maybe I can reschedule. Quinn is my family. If she needs me, I will always be there, but if I tell her I have a date on Friday, she will tell me not to come. Screw it. I’m pretty sure I can take the time off, and she needs me, so I’ll figure it out.

“I’ll be there. I’ll let you know when I head out tomorrow.”

“Really? Thank you, Paige! I don’t know what I would do without you.”

“Be bored out of your everloving mind.” I put my stuff away and head out to the kitchen. “I love you, Quinn; you’re my family. I’ll be there. I gotta get going, though. Work and all that.”

“Right, you get back to your exciting life and inappropriate elderly patients.” I laugh because the last part is very true, but exciting life? Yeah, more boring than exciting, I’d say.

“Love you, Paige! See you tomorrow.”

“Byyyyyyyeeeee!”

Smiling, I walk into the kitchen to get some much-needed coffee. Thorn is sitting at the table, ankles crossed, with a cup of likely-black coffee, scrolling on his phone.

“Morning, big brother!” I grab an overnight oats jar I have prepped in the fridge and go to sit down with Thorn.

“Mornin’.”

“How’d you sleep?”

“Good.”

“I see we are going to be real chatty today.” He finally looks up from his phone and stares at me. He is so fun to annoy. “Anyways, I have some news. Quinn just called, and she’s asked me to come help babysit Maddie.”

“You going to go?”

“Yeah, I mean, I need to talk to my manager today, but I have a lot of time built up, and she is a really good boss, so she likely won’t have a problem with me taking some time off.”

“When are you hoping to go down?” Thorn takes another sip of his coffee.

“Tomorrow, I guess. What time are you leaving today?”

He grabs his phone again and starts typing out a message. I don’t mind. He always has a million things going on in his head.

“Well, if you’re going down tomorrow, I’ll stay and drive you down.”

“Wait, really? Don’t you have your first meeting today?”

“It’s more of a formality today than anything. Greet the council sort of stuff. The main discussions won’t happen until tomorrow. Besides, Ric is down there. He can do the first meetings. I want to drive you down.”

“You don’t have to. I do have my own vehicle.” He finishes typing what likely is a message to Ric and puts down his phone.
