“Ah, shit. What do you want me to do?”

“Let’s just get back to the house. I need you to remain there while I check it out. Evidently, the firemen just arrived.”

“Okay. Happy to do so.”

I took long strides toward the sidewalk and before I had a chance to step off onto the street, he stopped me.

“Look, I didn’t want to tell you anything before, but I found a payment sent to Chase. It’s pretty large.”

Bristling, I glanced in his direction. “How large?”

“Two hundred thousand. Now, I’ve yet to confirm the source, but I wanted you to know.”

“Yes, I need to know every discrepancy no matter who it is or what the situation entails. I’ll handle Chase after I head to the warehouse.”

“Okay.”

We waited on the corner for the light to turn red. It was impossible not to take my eyes off her. I hadn’t planned on sharing the story about Emily, but the timing had been right. What struck me was how much weight telling her had taken from my shoulders. She stood next to the SUV, which she should know was against the rule, but at this moment it was good to see her smiling, waiting for my return.

My God, the filthy things I wanted to do to her were without a doubt a mortal sin.

It was a good thing she enjoyed them.

Maybe it was okay to face the anger and hatred, shoving it aside. Maybe I could live again.

I glanced down the street in the direction of where the hit and run driver had come from. While the fucker responsible had never been found, I had a feeling he was burning in hell. The light turned yellow and I half laughed. Maybe I did believe in divine intervention after all.

How many times in my life had my instinct saved my life and those of people I cared about? Enough that I always followed it.

That moment a sick feeling pooled into my stomach, every muscle tensed.

Then I heard it, an engine. A powerful engine.

The demons had returned, determined to strip away another possible moment of happiness. I lunged forward, forced to halt when a car jerked to a hard stop a split second before I crashed into it. The force was painful, pitching me backward but nothing was going to stop me from getting to her.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” the driver yelled.

I smashed my hands on the hood, pushing myself off as I grabbed the Glock from my pocket. It was another moment of slow motion, all time coming to a stop except for the vehicle speeding in our direction. The glint of the sun wasn’t enough to hide the sight of the open windows of the men holding the weapons, all trained on the woman I loved.

There was no time to fire off any shots. I had one goal in mind. Protecting her. There was one chance to do that. Just one. When I hoped I was close enough, I pitched my body into the air. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Connor throwing open the door.

Georgia screamed a split second before I tackled her to the pavement.

Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!

The heavy spray of gunfire was horrific.

I kept my body pinned over hers, fighting to get off even a single shot. The enemy’s dark SUV careened around a corner, tires screeching.

“No. No. No!” Georgia screamed, already fighting to get out from under me.

“Baby. Breathe. It’s okay.” It was anything but okay. However, I’d been able to save her.

“Dillon. Dillon!” She flailed and sobbed.

“Listen to me. The SUV is bulletproof.”

“No. No. No. No.” She fought with everything she had, sobbing and crying.
