“I don’t want a divorce,” he said softly, looking extremely out of place in my parents’ cluttered interior.

“Yeah, right.”

He ran his hands through his hair, messing it up even more. But all I saw were sparks calling out for me to wrap around.

I’m not going to give in.

“Can I sit down?” He nodded towards the chocolate brown sofa.

I shrugged.

His soft linen and cotton clothes conflicted with the fake leather of the sofa.

“Come sit next to me.” He patted the place next to him.

No way am I going to sit next to him.

“Sì?”

“Fine,” I muttered, sitting down but keeping a space in between. “If you dare touch me, I am tossing you out.” I ignored his dark look.

He muttered something in Italian.

“Huh… English please.”

He sighed. “You are not going to make this easy for me, are you?”

I stared at him, my mouth firmly closed.

“I don’t know where to start… I should have told you about the case. We got Yuliya’s grandparents to stop financing her. She lost interest in the case immediately and signed off all her rights to me. I was going to tell you, but I just didn't know how to.”

“‘Hey, I got full custody,’ would have done it,” I said bitterly.

He let out a frustrated growl. Leaning over, he caught me by surprise and latched on to my hand, dragging me closer to him.

“Let me go,” I yelled in his face.

“I won’t do anything else, I promise. Let me just hold you,” he rasped.

This close, he looked exhausted. Like he survived the wreck and hadn’t slept in a week, just like me.

Stupid illusions.

I let him hold me, though. It was purely because I didn’t have the energy to put up a fight.

“The rest was all lies.” Now he was pissing me off. I yanked to pull free, but his bruising hold refused to let me go.

“Fuck’s sake! My mother sent that fucking woman to you. Divorce was the last thing on my mind.”

Was.

“Did your mother also send your ex-wife so you could fuck her?” I asked sweetly.

“No,” he admitted.

The punch to my heart bruised me for a lifetime.

He leaned towards me, and I tilted sharply away. But it was only for him to grab my phone from his back pocket. I didn’t know if I was relieved or disappointed.
