He lifted his head, a frown between his eyes.

“Of course. Whatever makes you happy.”

I watched him. I didn’t believe he would be okay with whatever change I would make to his impeccably beautifully designed home.

“Is there anything else you want?” he asked me softly.

I smiled, shaking my head, distracted by the thickness between my legs.

“No. Just you,” I croaked.

That was all the invitation he needed.

As he came inside me, all thought filtered out. Except I thought it was a good thing that I was on the pill. Because Antonio was lousy at remembering to put on a condom.

I was window shopping with Cora in her stroller. We conversed among ourselves, making strangers smile at our baby talking. I stopped in front of a furniture store. It was beautifully designed with heaps of colours in it.

“That sofa has my name on it, Kutti,” I said to Cora as I eyed the terracotta sofa screaming for me. I glanced at Cora munching on her rabbit’s feet like it was her next meal. I didn’t think she liked the sofa. The phone in the stroller started vibrating. I fumbled through the blankets.

Why was it that it was never the first thing I touched?

My hands felt around and finally found it next to Cora’s giraffe. I put it next to my ears without bothering to check the caller ID.

“Hi, baby,” Adam’s voice rang out.

My hands turned cold. How did he manage to find me every time?

I turned back to eye Mario and Franco a few meters behind me. They were watching the window of the store and not paying any attention to me.

“What do you want, Adam? I told you to stop calling me,” I hissed.

“You know what I want, baby. I want you.” He said the same thing every time. I didn’t know how to make him stop. He was like a blood-sucking leech.

“I told you I am not coming back. I am married now.” I turned around and found Franco watching me. I didn’t want them to report back to Antonio. Something told me he wasn’t going to be pleased.

“Baby, I know you are making it up. Stop playing hard to get.”

“I am not.”

“Fine, then tell me where you are with your so-called husband. I’ll come visit you, and I might believe you then.”

“I am not going to tell you that, Adam.” I shifted uncomfortably on my feet. Why can’t I get rid of him?

“I told you I know the stock market. I’ve had a great victory. I’ll take you shopping. You can buy yourself a nice designer dress.”

His gloating on the line worked on my agitated nerves. “I don’t need a designer dress.” Franco started walking towards me. “I have plenty of designer dresses back at the mansion, thank you.”

Adam’s laugh rang out loud enough to annoy my eardrums. “Really, baby? Which rundown neighbourhood is this, then?”

“Really, we live on Beacon Street, right opposite a big green park, and it’s in no way run down,” I snapped and cut the line right before Franco reached me. I smiled at him and pushed the stroller inside the store. I hoped that would be the end of it. I wanted to show Adam I had moved on, but I didn’t know how.

He found me in our room, propped up against my new cushions, staring at my new purchase. I had bought the beautiful sofa.

I hadn’t dared to buy it without asking him, but when I had texted him to ask if I could buy something for the house, he hadn’t even bothered to ask what before answering yes.

Now, though, uneasiness was in the air. His scowl, directed at the new beauty in the room, made regret pool inside me.

He moved into the room, standing in between the sofa and the bed. He held his body tight, and it told me to run. His face was dark, and his jaw taut, a muscle twitching.
