Is he having problems with Piper? No way. They are nauseatingly in love.

Right?

Except now that I think about it, they were going round about Piper wanting to have a party at their place after the Friends and Family Skate at the arena next week. Neither of them seemed pissed, but Piper was pushing, and Bowie was pushing back.

I wouldn’t call it fighting, not in the way they usually fight.

But… now my mind is speeding, asking a million questions at once. Like whether there’s more going on with them than I know about. And if I’m going to have to break my buddy’s face for breaking my little sister’s heart… or talk him down from the ledge because she’s about to break his.

No. No way.

I’d know. Would have seen something. Anything.

But as soon as the thought crosses my mind, I’m reminded of their bang-up job keeping the truth from me when they first got together.

Gulp.

Bowie clears his throat. “How about that place around the corner we never go to.”

I do a double take.

“The Hidden Bridge?” Um. There’s a reason we never go there. Not our speed. Too slow. Too quiet. Too moody, maybe?

“Yeah, that’s the one.” He looks out the driver’s-side window like he doesn’t want to make eye contact. Or to check traffic, but my gut’s picking up an option-A vibe.

Damn.

We don’t talk until the car is parked and we’re almost at this weird-ass bar that’s been haunting the backside of our otherwise cool block. I want to give Bowie the chance to explain what’s happening in his own time, but “awkward silence” is my least favorite setting, and apparently he’s willing to live there.

I finally crack. “This about the Friends and Family thing?”

Bowie trips on the sidewalk, his head whipping around as he gapes at me.

Bingo.

I take a deep breath and reach for the door to this dark hole in the wall, holding it open as I wave him through.

“Seriously, dude. Get with the program.” I’ve got this. Their relationship is safe in my hands. “Compromise and communication are essential components to being a power couple.”

Bowie looks up at me, one brow lifted, all WTF. “Power couple?”

“Umm, yeah. As in, your love was enough to make me change my dickish ways, find forgiveness in my heart. Be a bigger man, better friend. Hotter all around.”

He shakes his head and drags a hand over his face. “Right.”

At the bar, I look around. This place isn’t so bad for one drink.

Bowie flags the older guy drying glasses. “Four shots of Jack and a couple of the IPAs you’ve got on tap.”

I blink.

Okay, then. Bowie knocks back one of the shots before the others are even poured and then nods for me to do the same.

So yeah. Whatever he’s about to tell me… I’m not going to like it.
