“It isn’t pretty, Zara.”

“I gathered.” She offers me a sad smile and crawls up my body, brushing her lips along mine.

“You think my past is all sunshine and teddy bears?”

“I was waiting for you to tell me the truth, angel. If I’d have known this was the method, I would have cuffed you to the bed and edged you until you told me.”

“We’re having a baby, Frankie. That changes everything. If we can’t open up, at least to each other, we have nothing.”

“You want me to change?”

She shakes her head. “Not even a little, I don’t mean that. I quite like you, all cold and ruthless. What I mean is you need to let go of the demons in your past, accept them and focus on what we have here. I’m not going anywhere.”

I may not like being at her mercy, but she’s right. We are so close to having it all, ruling our empire and building a family. My past and a quest for revenge have fueled me for ten years. Now, I have an end to this and a fucking perfect future almost in my gasp.

She goes to free me, and I bite down on her nipple.

“I suggest you sit that pretty pussy on my face first.”

Her green eyes light up and she blows a strand of her black hair out of her face. “I’m not going to argue with that.”

With his shirt draped loosely over my shoulders, I find myself absentmindedly tapping my fingers against the rich oak dining table, the sound blending with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee he’s making.

He’s dragging this out.

Whatever happened, he really doesn’t want to speak about it.

He places the steaming cup in front of me, and I lick my lips, needing the caffeine. I tossed and turned all night against him in anticipation of this morning.

“Thank you.”

“Decaf, sorry.” He winks.

It’s going to be a long seven months without real coffee.

He pulls out the chair next to me and sits, tapping his thigh.

I slip over and sit on his lap, sliding my cup along the counter as I move.

I’ll wait for him to start. I’m already on the edge of his patience today after my stunt upstairs.

“Ten years ago, I was going to be a dad to a little girl. Her name was going to be Valentina. Her mother was my childhood sweetheart.”

Was.

As his arm wraps around my middle, I run my fingers along his forearm to provide reassurance.

“The day before we were meant to leave, my older brother, Marco, told me he had murdered Romano’s wife.”

“Wow, it’s been going on since then?” I ask, turning to look at him.

“Yes. My idiot of a brother didn’t thinkthe retaliation would happen so soon.” He swallows, tightening his grip on his drink.
