“Stay close, be careful,” he said. He slashed at a fairy who came close, blood spraying from the wound on his shoulder. He howled and dropped his sword, which Ronan picked up.

“I’m going to fucking kill him,” Ronan said, looking for Cenrik, who stood by the king, away from the fighting.

Ronan figured him for a coward and he was right.

Alanah seemed to snap out of whatever surprise she’d had at learning her parents hadn’t cared that she was supposed to mate a monster, and lifted her hands into the air. A huge flock of black birds appeared, going right for the fairies and attacking.

The males shouted in alarm and swung their swords wildly, trying to avoid being pecked to death by dozens of big birds.

Ronan and Galen dove between a set of soldiers, beating them aside. Ronan put the sword to Cenrik’s neck.

“You shouldn’t have tried to blow us up,” he said.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but if someone wants to blow you up then I applaud them.”

Ronan slashed downward, cutting the male’s cloak and digging into his chest. “Try again. You tried to kill us at the hotel.”

“Let him go,” the king said.

“Tell me the truth!”

“We didn’t try to harm anyone,” Cenrik said, clutching at his bleeding chest. “We have no reason to lie, especially not to the likes of you.”

Alanah screamed his name and shoved Ronan aside. He stumbled, dropping the sword. There was a splintering sound followed by a sickening squelch. Spinning, he saw a tree branch sticking out of the center of Alanah’s body. She gasped, choking on her own blood, as she fell to her knees. He rushed to her, cradling her close.

“Alanah.”

Her eyes closed and his beast let out a grief-filled howl. No! This was not how things were supposed to end for them.

“It should have been you,” her father said. “My daughter sacrificed herself to save a beast.”

Serena screamed and the trees shook, roots rising up from the ground and twisting around her parents, sending them flying through the air into the darkness.

The roots shot through the air and wrapped around the king and Cenrik.

“Save her! Save her life or die!” Serena’s eyes were entirely white, her body covered with pulsing vines.

“Serena?” Galen asked.

“Now,” Serena said.

The roots tightened around Cenrik and he shrieked in pain.

“Fine, I will,” the king said. “Then you’ll leave this place forever and never return.”

“Just save my sister and you can fuck all the way off with this commune.”

She loosened the roots from the king, but left Cenrik knotted up with them.

The king swept his cloak aside as he squatted down. “Pull the branch from her body, then give me your hand and the female’s hand.”

Ronan stared at him warily.

“It’s okay, he can heal her,” Serena said.

“She’s not dead yet, but there’s not much time,” the king said.

“Don’t do it,” Cenrik said, then he squawked loudly as the roots tightened around him more.
