“I’m starving too,” Sylas said.

Ronan rolled his eyes. “Fine, we can grab breakfast first and then meet Alpha Black.”

“Yay,” Taryn said, doing a little dance.

“You guys exhaust me,” he said, meaning every word.

“You love us,” Sylas said.

He ignored his brother and still-dancing sister and finished unhooking the fifth wheel arm from the truck. He hooked up the power line so the refrigerator and other electronics wouldn’t continue to drain the batteries, and then he met up with his siblings at the truck.

“Anyone look up a place to eat?” he asked.

“I did. It’s called The Greasy Spoon,” Taryn said.

“How original,” he said.

“Hey, it must be good if they’re leaning into the whole greasy-spoon thing, right?” she suggested with a shrug.

“Hopefully,” Sylas said.

Ronan climbed behind the wheel. Taryn got into the passenger seat and found the restaurant on the GPS while Sylas got into the backseat.

“Onward, my good man,” Sylas said. “Before my saber claws his way out of me to go hunting.”

Ronan snorted. “You’re an idiot.”

The Greasy Spoon lived up to its name, but the food had been good. After a large stack of pancakes and enough bacon to clog his arteries, Ronan was ready to meet with Alpha Black.

His siblings were quiet on the drive to the outskirts of Belle Terra, and he was too. A strange feeling came over him as they neared the supernatural town, run by a vampire master and open to other supernatural creatures. There were two wolf packs that divided the territory, with the group of vampires—known as a kiss—keeping to the center of town where they had a club and offices, plus the hotel.

He stomped on the brakes as a strange feeling came over him.

Taryn’s phone hit the dashboard and clattered to the floor.

“Dang it, dude,” she said, picking up her phone.

“What the hell?” Sylas demanded.

Ronan stared out his window at the imposing forest beyond the city limits of Belle Terra. Although the sun was shining, the woods remained dark, as if the canopy of trees was too dense to allow the rays of sun to filter through.

He knew where he’d seen those trees.

His mating dream.

“Ronan?” Taryn asked.

“I think…shit, I think my mate’s in there.”

Alanah was nearing delirium. How long had it been since she had food or water? Three days. No, four.

The king hadn’t sent anyone down to tend to her or her parents. Guards patrolled outside the prison, but they didn’t heed their calls for help so they’d stopped trying. Her parents hadn’t said anything in a few hours, and she wasn’t sure if they were just sleeping or if they’d passed out.

A bird chirped outside the small, barred window of her cell. There was no glass in the window, so at least she had fresh air coming in when the wind blew in the right direction to pour through the space. She rose from her cot with a groan and paused as her vision swam from hunger and she nearly passed out. When the feelings had passed, she climbed onto the cot and peered through the window.

The little bird that Cenrik had struck hopped around on the window ledge.
