“Hey, we gotta go,” a female called from somewhere in the jail. “No telling when someone will come to check on the guards you two disabled.”

Ronan hustled from the cell with her in his arms. She had the foresight to look in the other cells as they passed by and they were empty, just like the squirrels said.

He descended the stone steps.

“Wait,” she rasped, entirely happy to be snuggled in his arms and not in the cold, damp jail cell.

“What?” he asked, slowing his gait.

“The bird, outside the window.”

“What about it?”

“I need him with me. He…he’s injured.”

Ronan stared down at her with a curious look. “All right. You heard my mate, Sylas.”

“Seriously?” he asked, incredulous.

“Do it,” Ronan growled.

Sylas darted by them.

“Anything else we need to rescue?”

“Just me,” she said.

“I’ve got you, don’t worry.”

“Hurry, for fuck’s sake,” the female said.

“Hold on tight sweetheart, I’m going to run,” Ronan warned, a heartbeat before he hit the top step and raced away. She jostled and bumped against his body as he hugged her close. Her nausea rose with every footstep, but she fought the motion sickness, not willing to barf on her truemate at their first meeting.

The forest rushed around them, the sunlight barely making it through the thick canopy. The female ran ahead of them, opening both doors and then moving like a blur around to the driver’s side, where she got in and started the engine. Ronan climbed into the backseat with Alanah and set her in his lap, then slammed the door.

A moment later, Sylas got in and shut the door.

Tires squealed as the truck lurched.

“I’ve got you,” Ronan said.

Alanah blinked up at him, her vision swimming as exhaustion overwhelmed her.

“Hotel.”

She felt like her tongue was made of cotton and her brain wasn’t quite working like it should.

Ronan frowned. “Hotel? What hotel? The supernatural one in Belle Terra?”

She nodded, her fingers curling and her nails digging into his shoulder a little as she struggled to stay awake long enough to get to her sister.

“Serena. Sister.”

“Your sister’s at the hotel? Her name is Serena?”

She licked her dry lips, wanting to have a full conversation with him, but instead she could only nod.

“Okay, we’ll go there. You heard my mate, Taryn.”
