“I don’t know if she’s gay, which is fine either way,” Pops gave me a look, “What I meant was she and her friend are coming over. She has a friend who traveled with her, so I invited them both for food and drinks,” Pops corrected.

Oh, thank God he’s talking about Callie. Crisis averted. Pops said she would be over in about two hours. I need to change so I can make another good impression. I need to get her into my bed, so it’s time to up my game.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Aubrey

Callie and I got ready to head to dinner with the Fosters. I wanted to look nice but casual. I changed about five times. I settled on a knee-length sweater dress with skin-colored tights and cute ankle boots. I felt more nervous about meeting Liza than I had been about meeting August. I didn’t think that being more nervous than that was even possible. I don’t want her to hate me. I hope they aren’t fighting because of me.

“I hope this goes well,” I said to Callie.

She linked her arm to mine and put her head on my shoulder. “It will. He already loves you; she will too. You are too amazing not to love.”

I looked at her with admiration. “How did I get so lucky to have you as a best friend?”

“No idea, but you’re a lucky bitch, Aubs,” she laughed and then got more serious. “We both are.”

I nudged her and laughed as we grabbed our purses. I told her we should text Nick and let him know it was going well. She rolled her eyes at me. I stopped dead in my tracks.

“What could you possibly be mad at him for? How is that even possible? We aren’t even home, Cal.”

Callie was always mad at him for something. I think it’s purely sexual tension.

“No, I just didn’t wanna think about him while we were here.”

She started walking again and stepped in front of the elevator door to press the button.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Callie rolled her eyes again. She pulled me to get me moving. “Never mind, let’s just go.”

I let it go and made a mental note to ask her about it later. Something was off, but now was not the time to get into it with her. I sent Nick a quick text on the way over instead.

It was a gorgeous home with a cottage further back into the backyard. It was almost something you see in the movies. It was a white house that had blue shutters and a black door with perfectly cut grass and a white fence. It reminded me of the perfect life I had always wanted.

We approached the door, which flew open before I could knock. Liza was so pretty. She had pretty brown eyes and short, curly, auburn hair that was turning gray at the roots. She was tiny. If I had to guess, she was shorter than my mom.

“You ladies are beautiful!” she exclaimed, looking us up and down. She cradled my face in her warm palms as tears welled in her eyes.

“Oh my gosh, look at me keeping you in the cold; please, come on in.” She opened the door wider and gestured for us to enter. “August will be right down. Come sit with me in the den while dinner finishes cooking.”

I was so nervous. I was almost too scared to speak. Callie gave me a look, and I just shrugged.

“I’m Callie; nice to meet you, Mrs. Foster.” She reached out to shake her hand, but Liza went in for a hug before she could sit.

She scoffed. “Oh please, call me Liza, and we hug in this family.” Then she looked at me and grabbed my hand, “I could tell when I saw you that you must be our precious Aubrey.” She pulled me into the tightest embrace. She smelled like cocoa and apple pie.

“Yes, I…Uh…It’s great to meet you. August couldn’t stop talking about you at lunch.” I added. My brain had stopped working, and I was stuttering.

She couldn’t stop smiling. She stared for a second, and then I think she realized she was gawking. She stood back up.

“Can I get you ladies anything while we wait? Water, wine, soda?”

I realized I was still holding the wine we brought.

“Wine would be great,” Callie answered as she grabbed it from me.

I nodded my head in agreement. Liza headed into the kitchen. I let out a breath as soon as she left, but I quickly tensed back up when she returned; she was still smiling from ear to ear.
