Aubrey: Hi.

Me: Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it?

Aubrey: Yes, I’ll be fine, but no. We don’t need to talk. I’m sorry I kissed you. I shouldn’t have done that. I meant what I said about not ruining things with August and Liza. They are important to me, and so are you.

I thought about how to respond for a second.

Me: I’m not. I’m glad it happened.

I smiled like an idiot when I saw the three dots pop up as she responded. My heart started to quicken, and I felt my cock stir. Who the fuck am I? This girl is making me act like a stupid ass teenager.

Aubrey: Goodnight Lincoln. Sweet dreams.

Me: I know what I will be dreaming about. Night, Aubrey

Then I saw her light go out. I sat there for a while and started idly scrolling through my phone. I can’t wait to kiss her again.

Aubrey and I haven’t returned to normal after our dream-inducing kiss. Although we’ve exchanged a few flirty texts, our conversations haven’t progressed to where I want them to be. We’ve been on several runs together over the last few days but barely spoke during them. It’s been driving me crazy that she’s so close yet so out of reach, and I feel like she gets more beautiful every time I see her.

Aubrey has been catching up with Pops and working at The Music Bar, but she hasn’t spent much time with us outside of that. She’s been going straight to her room after dinner to write or play her guitar.

Earlier today I overheard her planning a visit for her parents to come here to Tennessee. Pops is eager to meet her parents, and I hope the conversation goes well for her sake. She has expressed how nervous she is about it.

As for me, today marks the end of my work week at the school since it's Friday, and I couldn’t be more excited. Usually, I don’t get this excited because I love my job and my students, but tomorrow I will be at The Music Bar with Aubrey all day. She’s giving some of the younger kids in town guitar lessons to try to help promote kids joining the school’s band. I helped her put up some flyers around town the last few days, and she has had a surprisingly big sign-up.

I am starting to wonder about how long she will stay. She must have to get back to her everyday life eventually, but I’m hoping the class means she’s staying for a while. I know she misses her family and friends like crazy. She’s always talking about them. She told me she’s never really been away from them except for a college trip years ago. I can understand because when my parents went on that trip, it was the longest five days of my life.

Mom and Pops told me they were taking Aubrey to our favorite restaurant tonight to change it up a bit so no one had to cook. When I finally left work and walked into the main house, I froze when I saw a handsome man I didn’t know sitting on the couch. I’m confident enough in my manhood to admit when a guy looks nice.

He looks familiar, but I can’t quite place him. He was laughing with Aubrey. They sat there with their knees touching, looking at a book together. Then he put his hand on her knee, and I walked forward. My gut felt like it was going to fall out of my ass. Is this jealousy? It can’t be. They’re only laughing. Why do I even care? She has a right to do whatever she wants, but I don’t have to fucking like it.

Aubrey stood up fast when she saw me come in, almost like she was caught doing something wrong.

“Lincoln, this is Dan; his dad owns the bookshop on Main St.”

He stood. “Hey man, I think we met a few years ago when I was home from college,” he said as he shook my hand. “Aubrey came into the bookshop every day this week to check it out and loved so many books; we just had to keep talking; we seem to have a lot in common.”

Then he smiled at her. Fucking smiled. It was like looking at a little schoolboy with a crush. “She invited me over for some coffee so we could continue chatting, but I was just heading out to meet some friends. We are going to karaoke tonight if you care to join us?”

He seemed annoyingly calm, and I’m not sure why he was explaining what he was doing here to me, of all people, but whatever.

“Uh, yeah, sure. I guess that could be fun. I’ll see what’s on my schedule.” I was trying not to sound rude.

She gave me a knowing smile and looked back at him. “Let me walk you out.”

She nodded politely at me, excusing herself. When she came back in and walked by me I could smell her shampoo again. I’m starting to really love strawberries. She passed me to pick up the coffee cups they had left and went into the kitchen without saying a word. I followed her and heard her snicker when she noticed my presence.

“So, you’re going out with that tool instead of attending the dinner Pops and Liza planned for you?” I said rudely. It was none of my business, but I had to ask.

She didn’t even turn to look at me when she laughed. “How do you figure he’s a tool? You just met him.”

I sighed rather loudly, “I just know. I can tell.”

“Can you now?” She turned to me with an annoyed look, “Not that I owe you any explanation, Lincoln, but dinner with August and Liza is at six-thirty. I’m not meeting Dan at karaoke until around eight. Is that okay with you? As he said, you can come if you want.”

The way this girl says my name. Ugh, it turns me on every time. “Do you want me to come?” I asked, almost hopeful.

“It’s up to you, Lincoln; you are a big boy who makes his own decisions.” She sounded condescending, but I let it slide. “It’s just a bunch of his friends and me hanging out. If I’m going to be here for a while, I need to make friends, so that’s what I’m doing. You are the one who told me you don’t have many friends. If you don’t want to—”
