“Okay, they are yours. Now get up, let’s go; I’ll even make you some coffee if you are a good boy.”

I got out from under him and winked.

“You’re no fun in the morning,” he whined.

I just smiled at him. “Oh really? No more blow jobs then. Is that what you’re telling me? That wasn’t fun for you?”

He put up his hands in defeat. “Fine, you win,” he chuckled.

We got dressed, then he walked with me into the main house. I froze when I walked through the door.

“Glad you guys got home okay.”

Liza sat at the table with a cup of coffee and her book. She didn’t even look up when she spoke. Link nudged me inside and shut the door. He walked around my frozen body, over to her, and kissed the top of her head. It made my heart twist with admiration.

“Hey, Momma. What are you doing up so early? It’s not even seven yet.”

He was acting completely normal like she hadn’t just caught us doing the walk of shame.

My legs finally started to work, so I walked over to get coffee silently and made Link and me a cup, taking my time in order to avoid her for a little bit longer. I placed them on the table, and he pulled me into his lap before I could sit down.

“Link, stop it.”

I blushed as I wiggled from him playfully to let me go to sit in my own chair. Liza smiled a little and gave a quiet chuckle.

“How was the concert?” She looked up this time, but there was no sign of judgment whatsoever in her eyes.

“It was wonderful. We had a great time,” I said.

As I looked over at Link, I could feel my cheeks warming even more because I felt like we were caught doing something wrong. We sat there enjoying our coffee, and I looked at Link to keep the conversation going and make it less awkward, but he just kept smiling at me. I think he was enjoying my discomfort a little too much. Before I could say anything, Liza put her book down and placed her glasses on it.

“Link, go out and grab us some bagels and muffins. I think Aubrey and I could use some bonding time.”

He raised his eyebrows as if to ask me if that was okay. I nodded slightly to answer his unspoken question.

“Okay, sounds good,” he finally said.

He got up and walked over to me. “Guess we will have to skip our run this morning after all.” He leaned down and whispered, “My reason for skipping would have been much more fun.” He gave a smug smile and nipped the top of my ear lightly like he was proud he was getting his way. That single gesture was so damn sexy.

“I’ll be right back; text me if you ladies think of anything else.”

He kissed my forehead before leaving. It made my insides warm all over again. Once Link left the kitchen, I slowly turned my gaze to Liza’s.

“I’m sorry,” I wasn’t sure what else to say. I put my head back down, realizing I couldn’t look at her. I felt like a kid in high school all over again. I started fidgeting with my fingers, and she grabbed my hand.

“You have nothing to be sorry or embarrassed about. You are two consenting adults enjoying each other’s company. You owe no one, especially me, an explanation for that. I just wanted to talk to you, check-in and see how you’re doing; make sure everything is going well.”

It felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I think I even audibly let out the breath I was holding.

“I love it here. I wish I could stay forever. I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to stay with you and for welcoming not only me but also my friends and family into your lives. When this all began, I was terrified I would be blowing up August’s life.”

“Oh. sweetheart,” she leaned forward to grab my other hand, now holding them both. “You made his life so much better. He is so much happier now that he knows you. Many people in this town are better because they know you.” I knew she was talking about Link. “You are helping so many kids learn how to play the guitar. You’re getting kids excited about wanting to join the school band and even helping August in the shop. He seems to be a lot more organized, thanks to you.”

“Thank you for saying all that. As I said, I really love it here. You guys have made my life more abundant than you even know. And yes, your husband needed organization. That man didn’t even know half of what was happening in those books.” We both sat there giggling together. It felt nice.

“Sweetie, you have no idea how much joy and faith you have brought this family.”

I looked at her, confused.
